GM PAINT IS PERFECT!!! ALL OF YOU ARE LIARS!

Question:

Check those late 80s to early 90s vehicles.  That’s when the adhesion problem was prevalent.

Response:

I love GM, but they did infact have a poor primer in 88-89.  This caused the peeling everyone is familar with.  I have seen it on Berettas, Corsicas, Full size trucks, Astros, Cavaliers, and I’m sure this primer was used at other plants, on other cars.  GM was repainting these cars, but unfortunatly the time limit on the problem has exceeded for most of the vehicles.  I own a 90 Beretta, and a 98 Z24, but neither have a problem with paint.

Response:

Let me jump in here with yet another opinion.  As explained to me by GM, the paint was not the problem.  The EPA required GM to change primers.  The new primer met some new we-don’t-want-no-goldanged-hole-in-the-ozone regulation.  Unfortunately, it did not bond with the paint.  Consequently, wind-friction wore the paint down and then off.  My ‘90 Astro peeled in sheets!  GM, however, stood behind its product.  Original owners (NOT repurchasers) received new primer and paint — hugely expensive — IF they learned of GMs offer.  Since paint is not considered safety related, there were no recalls.  My local Chevrolet dealer took my van down to bare metal, reprimed it, finished it with the original charcoal over pearl and gave it  back to me better than new.  (Of course, some lot monkey had blown all the speakers so we went war over that!)  I drove the van another five years with no signs of wear or fading. I doubt that GM is the culprit in any of this.  I think we can look to the fine leadership in Washington DC.  Why would any major manufacturer use paint that it knew wasn’t going to last as long as the warranty?  BTW, the paint on my wife’s 1987 Grand Am, 1996 Bonneville and my new Astro is perfect! Response:

My opinion is that any time you have the dealer do anything, you’re in for a ride.  I’m so used to taking "repairs" back a second time, I schedule it in advance.

It may depend on the color as well. Our white 1988 Corsica is perfect, no peeling, no rust, no nothing. A few dents though :-) — Robert Hancock         Saskatoon, SK, Canada Home Page: http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Arcade/9967

Maybe that’s true, or 1993 and newer models have better paint than the older models. Matt.

This is really informative.  GM produced two vehicles with decent paint.  I wished I had purchased one of those, instead of the one I got!   I believe people expect the paint to be good.  But, I would like them to be informed of what can happen if they get defective paint.  GM has and does produce some vehicles with defective paint.  They don’t have a process in place to fix those vehicles that suffer from this defect.  Fortunately for you, and others, you’re not victims. I, on the other hand, am one of those unfortunate victims.  So, congratulations and best wishes with your vehicles with defect-free paint. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >         Due to all of the posts about GM paint being awful, I want to say > something, the paint on my 1993 GMC YUKON (100,000+ miles) has a perfect > black finish on it, no peeling, no fading, no nothing!  My father has a > 1996 Monte Carlo (34,000 mi), no problems at all! no peeling, no fading, no > nothing! > remove SPAM to remove the spam-block. > Matt Molter >      Webmaster: >           http://www.wvonline.com/nascar >                http://www.wvonline.com/bhs > "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of >         a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, >                 shall not be infringed." >                               –United States Bill of Rights Amendment II

Response:

All of us are liars??  There’s probably a reason for so much response to the paint issue. Could it be that maybe a few people have the same problem? Just because the paint on your Yukon is fine doesn’t mean we are making this all up. The paint on my truck is peeling very badly (gray only, the red is fine) and has been since the first year I bought it – 1991. I’ll go on to say that certainly the majority of paint jobs are perfectly fine. But it’s a fact that GM did have problems with peeling paint (especially gray) and around here near Detroit, Michigan you see allot of older vehicles, early 90’s, peeling down to the primer. And btw, I never said "GM paint was awful" just that they had a problem and failed to take care of their customers. And maybe other companies have had their own problems, but that’s really not the point either. Thanks John L
