1997 ??Expedient–? A larger explorer?

Question:

I’ve heard Ford will bring out a larger Explorer in 1997 to compete with the Chevy Suburban.  Does anyone have any info on this model or a ford related web site to get more info? Thanks DROPSY

Ford is going to release a new model to compete with the Chevy Tahoe. The new model is to be called the Expedition and will be based on the Ford F-150 chassis.  Base engine in the Expedition will be the 4.6 litre Triton with a 5.4 litre as an option.  The vehicle is basically an F-150 from the windshield forward and a blown up Explorer from the windshield back.  The rear suspension will be a live axle like the Explorer, however it will ride on coil springs instead of leaf speings.  The four wheel drive system is an upgrade of the Control Trak system found on the V6 Explorer’s and is called Enhanced Control Trak.  The major difference in the systems is that the control switch is now a four position switch with a 4H position added to the already available 4L-Auto-2L positions.  This will provide a mechanically locked 4H operation which the Explorer did not have.  The interior is based on the F-150 pickup as well having basically the same dash panel.  The new Expedition is supposed to be available in late August/early September.  I found most of the information on this vehicle in a review that was in the summer 1996 edition of Open Road magazine. You can also find information on this vehicle on the Ford Web page at the address "http://www.ford.com/".  Hope this information helps. Ford’s new full size Sport Ute is called the Expedition.  The pictures I’ve seen have it looking like an elongated Mercury Mountaineer.   Apparently it will seat up to 9 people.  Expected price range is from 27-41K.  Don’t know when they’ll be out. Good Luck, Roger

Did see something that looks like this in Ann Arbor, MI last week.  Definitely it was an F-150 in front, kind of a large explorer in back. Might have been a test vehicle, or a prototype, or something like that– odd things do show up often in SE. Michigan….

I was reading the latest Car & Driver or Road & Track at the dentist’s office yesterday, and they had pix of the Expedition, as it appears to be called. It was just a picture and a paragraph caption — it’s a replacement for the full-sized Bronco, and is designed to compete with vehicles like the GMC Yukon. | Jim Jarrett, CCP                                                       | | Eastman Kodak CD Imaging                                               | | 901 Elmgrove Road MC 35400                                             | | Rochester, NY 14653-5400 (716) 726-6365                                |

The Vehicle you saw was the 1997 Ford Expedition.  It is a replacement to the Bronco, which was killed off this year.  It is similar to the Bronco in that it is based upon the F-150 truck.  The main difference is the fact it is a four door.  The Expedition is between the Explorer and the Chevy Suburban (GMC Yukon?) size wise.  It was meant to compete with the Suburban for the Full size sport utility market.  I think you should be able to get all of the avalible engines for the F-150 in the Expedition, along with 4 wheel drive.  And for anyone looking to buy a ‘97 Bronco, well, life’s tough, so look to the 2 door GM Full Size SUVs.      Hope I shed some light on this,           Paul Hallett P.S. The name for the new SUV came from the 2 door Explorer High End trim level.  Anyone else notice it’s now called the Premium Sport Package?

where could we see a picture of this ford EXPEDITION…….

Response:

I saw a show on the dish saying that the 97 F150 shared many components with the 97 explorer replacement.  They showed a spy photo. Also, it will have the V8 4.6 ltr modular engine, not the pushrod 5.0 ltr as with my 96 explorer.  Looks like I got the first and last model year 5.0 V8 Explorer!  Collectors Edition maybe :)  ? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I’ve heard Ford will bring out a larger Explorer in 1997 to compete with > the Chevy Suburban.  Does anyone have any info on this model or a ford > related web site to get more info?

Its called the Expedition.  It *IS NOT* an Explorer replacement!  It is a Broncho replacement.  It does look like a larger Explorer though (very nice indeed!) Jamie Mueller             "He learned too late, that man is a feeling Ford Motor Company        creature…."
