91 Gmc brake light comes on after 40 mph

Question:

My 91 gmc pickup has a problem with the brake light on the dash coming on as soon as the truck reaches 40 mph.  If I keep the speed under 40 the light never comes on.       I checked for codes and there are none.  I tested the speed sensor and it seems fine.  Today I replaced the Electronic Brake Control Module with no luck.  Does the speed sensor in the transfer case also control the speedometer in the dash?  My speedo works fine.  Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? Thanks, Mariano

Try unplugging the proportioning valve sender.  It’s a little yellow, single wire plug just below the master cylinder.  The prop. valve sender sits in the top of the aluminum prop. valve. Doc – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

Due to someone crossing five lanes of traffic in front of me without looking I need a new 4X4 ride. A friend told me about a 1981-87 Blazer a fellow worker of his has for sale. We went and looked at it this afternoon. (I can’t get up with the owner until Monday). All the info I have on it is that it is the ‘81-’87 body style, Diesel, 2-door, towing package, auto, power windows, power locks, fair shape. (It is not an ex-military Blazer). Here in coastal NC I don’t go surf fishing when it gets close to or below freezing, as I have a gas GMC pickup for a daily driver below, cold weather starting problems with a diesel are not a concern. What can you tell me good and bad about the diesel? I have a lot of experience with Chevy/GMC trucks but never with a diesel. If its too bad will a small block bolt up to the transmission. I have plenty of small block gas engines that I put in power boats, if I need to drop one in it.

Idler pully

Question:

Does anyone know how to stop the idler pully from squealing on a 2000 gmc 5.3. It does not squeal as bad when it gets warmed up but it’s still there. I wasn’t sure if it could be disassembled or if it has to be replaced.

hello, it has been my experience that the whole pulley has to be replaced.  i have a 1989 C1500 4.3 and have replaced 4 of them since i bought the truck in ‘92.  it’s a snap on my truck, take off the belt, and one bolt holds it on.   if you are talking about the belt tensioner pulley, it is the same thing, just remember that there is a little nipple on the back of the pulley that needs to be lined up correctly in a hole on the mounting plate, if you don’t get it right, it will easily break off.  i found that one out the hard way.   for my truck, the idler was about $15 US and the tensioner was about $30 US.  usually as a precaution i go ahead and change the belt.

Response:

Ok, If she’s eating gas she’s running way rich, which will cause the lack of power/hesitation.  It’s not spark related as a failed ignition component wouldn’t cause her to run rich, just run like shit. First place I’d look, seeing as how the problem is intermittant it the CTS (coolant temp. sensor) and make sure the connection is snug and that the terminals, connecting pins and wires aren’t corroded.  CTS is located right beside your waterneck on the intake manifold, it’ll have a 2-wire connector on it (usually yellow and black wires). Second, I’d run a bottle of Chevron Techron thru it to clean the injectors and make sure one isn’t sticking open due to gum and varnish buildup. Have you scanned the ECM for codes yet? Doc – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

Response:

i will try the cts and get back to you and i have not run the codes. It makes sense about the sensor and i do have intermittent problems with running rich . i replaced the o2 sensor and it seemed to help but it still does it when i run her for longer periods.i really appreciate the info because the truck is new to me and i dont know her that well yet . ill get back to you and see if its any better thanks

Battery, battery cables, alternator. —Bob Gross—

Response:

cant be battery or alternator because truck still runs starts right up headlights work and do not dim been driving it just lost four wheel drive, speedometer and heater really baffled anything else that would connect four wheel drive, speedometer, and heater?

Response:

Yeah a common grounding point between them all. Check to see if the ground strap from the engine to the chassis and the one to the cab are still OK. Bad grounds are real common. Rule of thumb on a ground is Bigger is always better. Remember all the juice used in the cab has to pass through the battery cables and through the grounds. Bad grounds gives flaky results. Also the bulkhead connector through the firewall have been known to go bad. Pull it apart and check the pins, any that are dirty or burnt? Clean or replace them. — Steve W. Worst of all was the ride.  That thing rode like … a TRUCK!  As I said, it had everything, and that included a trailer towing suspension.  Shake the teeth right out of your head. 2001 Silverado: Howl/whine in 4wd

Question:

I have a 2001 Silverado 1500 Z71 with the 5.3 liter engine and the automatic transfer case.  It has almost 36k miles. When I put the transfer case into any 4wd setting (auto, hi, lo) I get a low howling noise from the front of the truck.  There is no noise in 2wd.  The noise is loudest while accelerating but is also noticable when coasting to a stop.  The noise is also louder in ‘hi’ than in ‘auto’.  I just bought the truck so I don’t know if it has always done this or not. A Chevy dealer (Cambridge (MA) Chevrolet) replaced a hub which didn’t change anything.  They wanted to rebuild the differential for $1200 – $1700. Instead, I took it to an independent mechanic and they think the noise is normal transfer case noise.  I also had a GMC technician drive the vehicle and he thinks it is normal. Any advice for me? Thanks!

Yeah, All three of my last GM’s did this… My ‘00 Blazer had a mild howl, all of it’s 98K mile life. My old Avalanche did up until about 40K on the clock, then it almost completely cleared up. My current truck, an SS, is making the noise too… but it’s mainly while turning, because of the AWD setup. In both of my old trucks, I just ignored the noise and never had any issues.  All fluids were relatively clean w/no metal shavings or anything ugly like that in them. I’d have to say that it’s normal… -marc

Sounds like you have already had a number of opinions, are you just looking for more? Personally, I’d go with the original Chevy dealer.  It’s not normal for these trucks to howl when you put it in 4hi, but I see and overhaul bad front diffs in these trucks all the time.  It’s almost an epidemic in our shop.  Usually, the side bearings go out, you get excessive backlash, which takes out the gear set. Has anyone pulled the drain plug on the front diff?  Often, when they are coming apart, you will find all sorts of metal stuck to the magnet on the drain plug. Ian

As far as looks alone, the ‘94-’01 Dodge is my favorite followed by the ‘00 bodystyle Chevy/GMC and the Superduty Ford. The ugliest has to be the F-150 and the new Dodges followed by the new Chevy/GMC with those cute little slanted headlights. I imagine this will get a lot of shit rolling! <BG> A good friend of mine would not be seen in anything other than a Ford, most of my family drives Chevy and I have my Dodge. All have their good points and bad. All I can say is that they all come sucking up to me when it snows and I put the blade on!!  <VBG> Denny

I like the old style (‘85 to ‘90 square lights) Isuzu Bighorns (troopers in US), they have a nice solid square look, but aren’t as big and overdone as the XXXL size USA trucks. just my two pence rhys

With the letters out the truck (IMO) will look sharper and more sporty but you will have to keep ‘em clean! With ‘em in, the tires look bigger on SOME trucks and sometimes it gives a cleaner appearance.    It all boils down to what YOU want and what YOU like. Agreed.  Doesn’t the z71 sit pretty high above the tires?  I think there’s a good chance you’ll be able to see lettering at one angle or another if you tuck ‘em in. My neighbor’s z71 has white letters facing out.. it didn’t strike me as unappealing.. but at the same time I often wear grey and brown to work, so whadda I know? :-) -Steve

Yeah, maybe OT, but a good one. I find Tony’s other hobbies interesting and somewhat similar to mine. Also into home repair.  For the last 28 years of home ownership, I have done most all home repairs and improvements myself (actually my wife and I both get into this).  This past summer, and into fall, we finished a 8′x 32′ addition to the back of our kitchen/family room area, then I added a 12′x 20′ deck.  This was a fun and interesting (and hard!) project, but it didn’t leave much time for guitar playing, which I’m just getting back into now. Also like shortwave dx’ing.  Not real serious stuff, just a small Grundig portable.  Need to add an external antenna yet, maybe just a longwire.  I find this pastime interesting and a lot of fun.  Love to hear other opinions and other-side-of-the-world comments. Gotta’ admit my first love is cars, though.  Hot rods, muscle cars, 50’s and 60’s stuff.  Restored, modified, restified, whatever, I love ‘em.  About 7 years ago we put up a separate 24′x 24′ garage in the back yard just for my ‘workshop’.  Main project is a ‘66 Impala SS convertible.  Haven’t done much with it yet, but is down to the bare body on frame which I intend to pull off the frame next.  Just collecting parts at this stage, but do have a big block for it and a few other essential parts.  Plan to put a 4 or 5-speed in it.  Also have a ‘81 Camaro that I want to finish first and then sell.  Just a quick going-over mechanically, but unfortunately needs paint also. But once I sell it, I’ll have some extra cash to lead me to my next interest: Motorcycles.  Had a few some 30 years ago and got the bug again. Mid-life crisis?  Maybe.  Wife’s not real happy about this, but, hey, you only go around once.  Not really looking for the Harley/Jap-clone-cruiser stuff, though.  Something at least 750cc or maybe an older GoldWing tourer. And of course music.  60’s and early 70’s type.  Favorite band?  The Beatles of course (by now can you tell I’m an old guy?).  But I’m always interested in hearing any new music in this same vein. Especially acoustic guitar stuff.  Now if I could just get better at it. Sorry for the long post.  Got a ‘little’ carried away.  Good topic. Denny

Oh my, working, raising kids, just the normal stuff…;-). Seriously, like the Old Guy, my thing isn’t TV, but I will sit down and watch a sporting event every now and then.  I love to read, but haven’t done much of that lately.  I love teenagers and have been heavily involved in the local church youth group for the past few years.  That is probably the main reason I took up the guitar in the first place.  I can make the meetings so much more fun and interesting by strumming a few tunes and having some fun with the kids.  In fact, two of the kids have taken up guitar since I have and that is rewarding within itself.  Oh yeah, I love the game of chess too, but haven’t played much in the past few years.     Interesting thread idea, if a bit OT.  Me, I’m into so many things there aren’t enough hours in the day (LOL).  Music was my profession and first love for thirty years, and will always be my first love.  Besides guitar, I also play a lot of keyboard.    Other interests?  I’m going to limit myself to the "biggies": Home repair/woodworking. MW and SW DX – am a lifelong radio DX’er. Fishing and working on my outboard. Reading.    What I’m not interested in:  Television, most movies, virtually any sport except the Olympics, which I do like to watch.  Aside from the Olympics, I would rather watch grass grow (or play the guitar!) than sit through any televised sports event.  Different strokes.    I absolutely love guitar, but my very favorite instrument to play is the pipe organ.  The pipe organ is the musician’s Harley-Davidson!
