Sonoma fan/clutch removal?
Question:
> My 94 has 4 little nuts on studs in the water pump pulley that hold it on, > Just unscrew the nuts and take it off…
I wish it was that easy. You must have a different type of fan. On mine, there are four bolts on the fan and four bolts on the pulley. The bolts are easily removable, but the problem is that the fan and pulley are trapped between the pump and the clutch. The clutch/fan shaft screws onto a threaded piece extending from the pump, and it looks like the only way to get the fan off is to separate the pump from the fan shaft by un-threading it. I might be able to pull off the back cover and hold on the the propeller somehow. Thanks for your input. –John S.
Response:
Can’t figure out how to remove the fan/clutch on my 1996 GMC Sonoma 4×4 (4.3 Vortec). It looks like the shaft has to be unscrewed with a 36mm wrench, but what’s the trick to holding the water pump pulley in place while you turn the bolt? The fan is the plastic kind, and the clutch makes it impossible to simply remove the four fan bolts and pull off the fan. Thanks. –John S. Before you buy.
