I would never buy a new truck even if I did have the money. Wait and get one broken in and save a lot. My next truck will be a 8-10 year old 3/4 ton chevy in good condition for a good price which I plan to start looking around for next year. Its not considered a real truck until its at least 5 years old.

Hell yeah!  "Youngest" one I’ve ever owned and driven is 10 yrs of age; wifey has a newer one but women are different than men when it comes to Doc – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I can’t wait until I can afoord one, looks like a NICE truck.  It was > a blue Z71, with body colored flares., I REALLY wish I could plunk > down that kind of money.  Was at the local dealer, price on the > sticker was 27,000 and change…

I’m not trying to be rude, but was it really a "Z71 Colorado"? I thought Z71 was reserved for the full size trucks. Tony

In 2001 when I was shopping the used truck prices were way too high. I did not consider "bigger" was better. I wanted something reliable which would haul me and my dirtbike. The A/C had to work. It had to go 70 MPH with the A/C on. After several months the $3,000 rebate offered on 4 cyl 5 speed Sonoma looked awfully darn good. Got just about the cheapest Sonoma made that year. Long bed was essentially the only upgrade. I’d wish for less wind noise around the doors but otherwise it fills the task very well. If it has carpeting on the floor then its an SUV, not a truck.

It’s an oof-road suspension package.  Apparently GM is extending it across the pickup truck line, dunno if it’ll make it to the Trailblazers like it has to the Tahoe/Suburban.  Didn’t know it was offered on the 2WD, funny how they don’t make it 4WD only…

Comon, everyone lifts their 2WD truck and puts super swampers on them these days, not like they will ever take them offroad. Before I got my monte I was considering getting the Lifted 4 door S-10 model, the one that kinda looks like a baby avalanche, but the bed was too short to be useful for when I would need a truck.

Hey, you can put a SBC in the back of my 86 S15 Jimmy 4×4! The hardest part was moving it forward after lowering it off the hoist and trying not to snap off the tailgate. You can strap a 28′ extension ladder to the roof. It has enough rust so you can change the rear shocks without a jack. :)

Agreed (with the "blech").  Damn these things are ugly.  $27,000 and looks like shit.  Yeah, makes me want to go right and sign up. No disrespect, I realize we all like different things.  I just keep thinking how great Chevy trucks used to look and how disappointed I am in what they’re producing today.  I do hope that they turn out to be really good vehicles to fight off the Toyotas and Nissans. Well the Toyota & Nissan trucks are pretty high on the ugly scale too.  Especially ugly were the Toyotas of a couple years ago with the Buick-rip off grill.  The Nissan with the integrated bumper/grill just looks dumb. Jap trucks have a long way to go to even get close to American ones.

I was looking at new trucks a couple of weeks ago and had it narrowed down to a GMC Sierra or a Canyon. I drove a Canyon and quickly decided on the Sierra. The truck was cheaply furnished inside and even the salesman told me the sales staff were disappointed in the new mid-size GM trucks. Incidentally, the Canyon not only has a twin (Chevy Colorado), but a triplet (Isuzu D-Max). The D-Max apparently was part of a conceptual team project that spun off the three vehicles, or so I’ve heard. Here’s a pic of the D-Max if you’re interested. http://www.isuzu.co.jp/world/product/dmax/index.html Anyway, I love my Sierra SLT Extended Cab.

Response:

The D-max is a commercial truck. It has a smaller Diesel engine and a stripped interior.  it was designed and marketed as a work truck, but a "toy" like most trucks here in Southern CA.

I don’t know, I like the looks of the D-max better then the Colorado. I really like the engine options fro the D-Max. They should bring it to the US, I would get one… IF it was not way over priced like the Colorado. What ever happened to having simple trucks?

They’re still out there. But the engines and computerized systems are pervasive. Just opening the hood on my new truck is frightening. I don’t know a thing about what’s under the hood, and I used to tune up and replace a few parts on my old ‘78, until resuscitating it was going to require an engine transplant. That’s when I knew it was time to find a replacement or start doing some very long walks.  I hope this one runs as long as the one it replaced. If it does, I’ll either be retired or …..!

Question:

Now, are you talking about the black cowl cover (has holes in it for the windshield wipers) the cover that goes in it from the windshield, or the black pastic that sits atop of air intake for the vent system? :)

Yes.  The cowl was originally sealed to the windshield with some sort of black gooey stuff.  The cowl cover is supposed to let windshield water run over the cowl and then drain.  If it runs under the cowl, it runs directly into the air intake and fills up the glove box drawer.

Response:

Ah I see. It doesn’t fill up my glove box… I get water in the drivers floor board. I’ll go take some pictures tomorrow, and post em.. it’s an interesting problem.

On my car, water ran under the 6 foot long cowl cover and into the air intake.  From there it ran to various places inside dash area of the car.  I took most of the dash out a couple of years ago and saw rust trails all over the inside firewall where the water ran. Dealer wanted $262 for a new cowl cover.  I superglued the pieces back together and siliconed the cover to the windshield.  It worked.

Another possible explination is the heater core is leaking. It’s pretty easy to tell if that "water" has antifreeze in it, though.

Ditto on my little machine.  It’s definitely NOT anti-freeze. That’s interesting about how water goes hither and yon once it gets inside the dash.  Your description certainly matches my symptoms exactly.  It’s a little nippy and dark out there right now.  Probably wait till the weekend to attack.

Well, I actually took my car to the shop for another non-related problem. While they had it, I had them look for the leak (My mechanic has a 1 year parts & labor warranty so I figured what the hell). He ended up sealing the body again from outside and underneath. Leak gone.

I can tell you exactly where it is comming in at: The black plastic cowl seal is no longer sealed to the windshield. The seal around the hvac air intake is no longer sealed. Or a bad heater core.   Is it antifreeze? Had that problem on my 94 Sonoma.  Twice.  It starts with a slow leak and just gets worse from there.

2005 Grand Am / Cavalier to get new names.

Question:

Chicago Tribune article 6/26/03 Chevrolet confirms that its new small car will be called COBALT when it replaces the Cavalier for the 2005 model year. Chevy chose the Cobalt name because of it association with power and strength. Pontiac also says it will change the name of the Grand Am in 2005 but will not say to what.

Response:

Thank God!! At first, i thought chevy was going to drop the cavalier altogether (as in no more compact). If they did this, Chevrolet might as well bend themselves over and rip open a new hole. The majority of their sales are through the cavalier & the malibu. What next? drop the malibu and bring back the Chevette? Or how about the Celebrity? OK. Maybe the corsica or lumina. Thank goodness they’re bringing in something new and not a remodel of the past.

Response:

Well gm is changing a lot of things actually…. like the s10 is gonna be a colorado i think or its the sonoma one…. so like the grand am and cavalier arent gonna be the only ones to change……

Response:

Thats GM’s problem. They have all these great concept cars and idea’s but they fart around for years and by the time the release them they’ve been left behind or someone else take their idea’s. The Cadillac Sixteen is something that really needs to be produced as its concept advertises. DS Yeah the Formula got hit, Right front by a guy who blew a stop sign, The impact shoved the entire front nose over to the left about 12 inches, The car spun sideways to the left and then the rear bumper wraparound of the other car hooked in the RR 1/4 panel ahead of the RR wheel and tore the 1/4 panel off  and also pulled out the bottom of the Passenger doorskin…….what a mess but it was fixed. I got a picture of it, next time my buddy scans photo’s I can have him do that one. Harryface       1991 Pontiac Bonneville LE The 1/4 million mile car.

Question:

Take a 350 Chevy and cut #7 and #8 cyl’s off and you get a 4.3. Very good engine. Early models have a little vibration. Later models have a balance shaft right above the camshaft.

Response:

Trace,     I also have the auto mode for 4WD in my GMC Jimmy. The thing finds a slip situation from the wheel speed sensors. When this happens it locks you into 4WD. This is also a timed thing. It won’t shift out of 4WD, for a determined amount of time. I don’t know what that time is. This was explained to me by my friend from GMC. I no longer work there, but he keeps me up on this stuff.     This is not an exact thing. I think GM will get better at this stuff over time, but for now, when I park my truck after it was in 4WD auto, it binds also, at times.     I push the 2WD button when I park on a dry surface. If you leave it in 4WD auto, I doubt it will do any severe damage. Not for a parking maneuver. You’re moving at what?… 2mph?     4WD auto, is a good thing to tell your wife to drive in. If you know how to use 4WD, then use it as such. GMdude

The auto transfer cases use a clutch pack that is modulated by the t/case shift motor.  The clutch pack operates just like any clutch pack in an auto transmission, except it is manually actuated, not hydraulically activated.  When you shift into Auto 4hi….the front axle is activated, and the encoder motor begins to modulate the clutch pack which controls how much torque is sent to the front wheels.  Anywhere from 5-100% is applied when needed. There is a new TSB out for a multitude of problems with these auto t/cases.  It may not  necessarily apply to your vehicle.  We are finding that a lot of these trucks make some weird noises when customer’s attempt to run 4hi on dry surfaces.  Pretty normal. We are also finding a lot of these trucks have problems that originate in the front diff, usually side bearings that have had too much preload applied from the factory, takes out the side bearings, you get noise and it also seems to put an undue amount of stress on the t/case clutch pack and burns it up.  The TSB basically describes how to check for a burnt clutch pack and then overhaul the front diff and t/case clutch pack as required.  An easy way to check the clutch pack (well, perhaps not easy for the DIYer) is to jack the vehicle right up (all four wheels) put it in 4hi and slowly apply the brakes a bit.  If the front wheels stop turning, and the rear wheels are still turning…chances are the clutch pack is damaged. At any rate, you might want to take it in to the dealership, especially if it’s under warranty or even just a little off warranty.  If you have a good relationship with your dealer, they may help you out. GMdude

Response:

thanks for replies.  it’s more noticeable / severe than a shudder at full lock, it does it all the time when in auto mode. anyone know the TSB number? do 99 K2500 suburbans with AutoTrac suffer same problems as well?  (may be trading into one soon) Trace

Check with your dealer I believe there is a TSB for this condition.

99 Silverado Z71: the drivetrain seems to bind in auto 4wd.  my understanding of the system is that it has a center diff that should be open or limited slip in auto mode. my truck drives like it’s in 4HI when in auto mode.  is there a locking solenoid or something in the frontend that’s not disengaging for auto mode? it also seems to make more noise now than I remember when in 4wd.  any experience / advice?  anyone familiar enough with the design to describe it to me? TIA~Trace

Can’t give you a solution for this specific car. But stop driving it around as long as the problem is not solved. You might break a shaft. Good-Luck, Erik-Jan.  http://www.fotograaf.com/trooper

Response:

The idle RPM should be no higher than 1000, so no it is not normal. Especially if it is surging. Have it looked at – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> i have a 94 gmc sonoma 2wd 2.2L 5spd with 126,000 on it at idle my rpm’s > will surge from 1,000 to 1,400 is this normal ?

Where's my light sensor for the headlights on a 95 Corsica?

Question:

I have automatic headlights in my Corsica, they come on when it gets dark outside.  Unfortunately, the light sensor seems to be getting dirty or something as the headlights now come on when it’s just overcast.  They didn’t do that before.  Where is the sensor so I can clean it? — To email me, remove the number from my email address.

Response:

Should be in the dash top, look thru the WS, check in the defroster grill also. By the way the sensitivity can be adjusted in the sentinel module.
