Oil consumption on a 2.2L

Question:

Does anyone know what the oil consumption rate on a 1995 GMC Sonoma with the 2.2L engine should be. It seems like the engine is down 1/2 quart in 2000 kms. A GM rep. entioned that this might actually be normal, the truck only has approx. 37000 miles  or 62000 kms . on it to date… The engine runs very fine otherwise…

Response:

I have had vehicles that use about a litre in between oil changes.  When it was down a bottle, it was time to change the oil.  Have also had ‘em where they used none at all.  I think GM’s policy is about 2-3 between changes before they will even start monitoring… jed

When you hit 1 qt./800km then it’s time to start thinking about problems with the rings, valve guides. — Bob May I don’t read attachments to posts as they may give me a virus  If I expect an attachment from you I will open it.. You may have a brilliant thought but if you put it into an attachment I won’t read it and thus both you and I lose. I don’t like to say it but unfortunatly, there are those who insist upon being nasty to the rest of us.   Bob May

Response:

There is a GM bulletin on oil consumption.  It details the procedures to get accurate checks on the levels (consistent engine temp and wait times, etc.).  It also mentions a 3000 mile/qt guideline during the warranty period. In earlier decades, the spec for excessive consumption was 500 miles/qt, but that apparently has changed due to better machining, oil control from rings and valve seals, and long-term operation of emission controls. You might check for other maint items if it has increased from what it used to be, but it sounds pretty close to spec to me.   Enjoy! FS87LT
