Excessive fuel pump duration
Question:
I have just purchased a ‘91 4dr Eddie Bauer and I have a question. After turning off the engine, the fuel pump will run for a long time. I think more than 1 min. is excessive and sometimes it will run for 10. This is my first Ford – but I don’t believe this is normal. Or is it? Paul Sturm Arlington, TX P.S. It only does it when the engine is warm. Turn it off just after starting it and it wont do it.

No it is not. Have your vehicle serviced!

Does the E.B. have some sort of air bag suspension or electric fan? if not, sounds sort of fishy to me. What you are desribing is the fuel pump relay delaying to shut down, known concern, suggest replacing the relay. — Man did not weave the web of life – he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself. *Chief Seattle 1854* Larry Blackburn aka Renzo Ford Driveability Tech

It sound like you probably have a fuel system problem that is not allowing the fuel system to reach the pumps cutoff pressure. This could be a bad fuel pressure regulator valve that is not allowing pressure buldup and is returning fuel ( via the return line ) to the fuel tank or possibly an injector is stuck open and enough fuel is leaking through it that the pressure will not rise properly. Either way it is not normal and should be looked at by somebody familiar with the fuel system Brent Bolte 1991 XLT 4DR 4X4 EXPLORER 1995 XLT 4DR 4X4 EXPLORER

I have a 91 Sport and had a similiar problem. I had to take the fuse out of the power box under the hood to get the fuel pump to stop. The problem part was the fuel pump relay. I believe it was out of warranty but Ford still covered at least some of the cost due to saftey issues.
