Antilock Brake Lite

Question:

PE,         Gotta agree with Robert. The OBD2 diagnostics should point out the problem & within minutes. Next will be the bad news… you probably lost a wheel speed sensor or possibly the ALB brain has a problem. If your fortunate it will be the brake light switch. Just changed out the switch on my CK1500 pickup. Switch is wierd & a bitch to adjust. They aren’t just simple switches anymore!         By-the-way… You can’t bleed ALB brakes like the old ones either. Screws up the wheel speed sensors. You know it’s time to bleed the brakes.         But I have a good idea for you. Since you were a mechanic you will probably know the Snap-On dealer. He will know who bought a diagnostic tool from him & also have a practical suggestion as to who would be well qualified to deal with it for you. You don’t have to go to the dealer!

Not on a truck 96 or newer you can’t get the codes with a jumper. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Probably letting the dealer handle it is the best bet. Probably letting the dealer handle it is the best bet. They will retrieve the trouble code from the ABS computer from which they should be able to figure out quite easily what is causing the problem. It shouldn’t be a hit or miss thing unless they really are morons. Although, I think on some of the trucks you can read out the ABS codes with a simple jumper wire, but I don’t know which ones or how. Hopefully someone will post if this is so. — Robert Hancock      Saskatoon, SK, Canada Home Page: http://members.home.net/hancockr – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I need help. I need help. I have a 1996 GMC Sonoma with a four culinder engine and automatic trans. The antilock brake lite on the dash comes on and goes off at random. The truck drives and stops fine. The fluid level in the mastercylinder reservoir is proper. The truck only has 10K miles but is out of warranty time wise. Can anyone tell me if there is anything I can do to correct this problem? I am a retired mechanic (before computers etc). The dealer wants $58.00 to check it and then they will go from there probably replacing every part in the system till they hit the right thing. I cannot afford that.  Please if you have any suggestions that might help me, I would be most grateful.
