99 Sonoma DRL question.

Question:

>   First, I would like to say hello as I am new to this group.

Hello >  I recently purchased  a 1999 Sonoma equipped with a >  feature called DRL.

Feature or a bug.  It depends on how you look at things.  If you think it’s a good idea to shine 12x the glare light produced by regular low-beam headlamps into oncoming and leading drivers’ eyes, and think that makes you safer, then it’s a "feature".  If you think that’s a bad idea (which it is) then it’s a "bug". > I’ve noticed that the DRL turns off while the turn signals are > activated. Is this common or is it a bug within the lighting system?

That is how this DRL system is meant to operate. > Is there a way to deactivate this DRL system?

Yes.  In fact, GM was forced to do so on these very vehicles for a while in 1998, because the DRLs exceeded even the hyperexcessive glare limits in the poorly-written US DRL specification.  Without the service manual directly in front of me, I can’t give a step-by-step, but it can be done.   DRLs are not required under US law.  You are perfectly free to disable them. –Daniel TO WRITE TO ME:  Remove the headlamp from my return address.                      .______DANIEL STERN LIGHTING______.                      |     http://lighting.mbz.org     | — dastern "at" vrx "dot" net Automotive Lighting and Signalling Services NBCS b6f+wg++rp

Thanks for the nfo. I have the original owner’s manual, but I have yet to find a reference in regards to disabling the DRL system.  Thanks Again, G.M.

Thanks, Works nicely on a ‘97 Sonoma.  Never minded the lights being on, but the green indicator on the instrument panel always bothered me.

Response:

My 1998 GMC 1500 has a 15 amp fuse marked ‘DRL.’  I just pulled the fuse and the DRLs are disabled and I have seen no other problems in a year. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > There’s no easy way to be rid of the pesky things.  I have never, > however, seen a DRL equipped vehicle that kills the lamps when the > blinker is on. > First, I would like to say hello as I am new to this group. >  I recently purchased  a 1999 Sonoma equipped with a  feature called >  DRL. I have, that’s how the Jimmy/Sonomoa with the newer (99 and later I think) front design work.  DRL’s are pesky?  My truck doesn’t have them but I don’t go ANYWHERE without turning the headlights on… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > There’s no easy way to be rid of the pesky things.  I have never, > however, seen a DRL equipped vehicle that kills the lamps when the > blinker is on. > First, I would like to say hello as I am new to this group. >  I recently purchased  a 1999 Sonoma equipped with a  feature called >  DRL. There’s no easy way to be rid of the pesky things.  I have never, however, seen a DRL equipped vehicle that kills the lamps when the blinker is on. > First, I would like to say hello as I am new to this group.   >  I recently purchased  a 1999 Sonoma equipped with a  feature called >  DRL.   First, I would like to say hello as I am new to this group.    I recently purchased  a 1999 Sonoma equipped with a  feature called DRL. I’ve noticed that the DRL turns off while  the turn signals are activated. Is this common or is it a  bug within the lighting system?  Is there a way to deactivate this  DRL system? The truck was purchased in the U.S. with about 16,000 miles left on  the factory warranty. Thanks,  Griffin.
