96 GMC 2.2l Headgasket
Question:
Gary I understand the properties of chemical reactions. And I am grateful of your response and advice. I am trying to see how many of 2.2l owners have this problem. That way GM can get their act together and put a good gasket in these engines. To make GM also recall the crappy gaskets that are on our cars and trucks. But this will not happen if they (GM) dosen’t know. Furthermore, why change the coolant every year when it is 5 year/100k service interval? I would understand changing it every year if that was the service interval. And that is where the problem (GM’s lack of testing or whatever) lies.
Response:
I hate to burst anyone’s bubble.. I wouldn’t count on GM fixing the gaskets anytime soon. The Sonoma motor is almost the exact same motor from a Cavalier (look at a 92-97). And the gaskets has been leaking on them since their introduction. (It’s about the only thing that goes wrong, though.) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Gary > I understand the properties of chemical reactions. Don’t know about the trucks, but in the Cavalier, GM has sent a special policy letter to the owners extending the warranty on the head gasket to 5 years/100,000 miles. — Big Daddy loose the WW to email ‘74 Sporty hot, blue, and rigid http://209.27.24.92/usr/mel/rmh/bigdaddy.jpg ICQ# 6342575 AIM "crowfam4" ASE Master Auto tech. I have a 96 GMC Sonoma with the 2.2l engine. It has 49k on it and I bought the truck brand new. It has never overheated and all of the scheduled maintance was done. The headgasket went out on it a few days ago (coolant leak from back of engine). This not a normal problem for an engine with this kind of mileage. I brought it to the dealer where they said that it is normal. They have seen 2.2l with less than 30k with this problem. The head was not warped and there was no scoring. I feel that GM has known about this for a while b/c they offered to pay a 1/3 of the cost. Now I am asking everyone with this problem to speak up. I feel that GM has been putting a crapy gasket in this engine. GM needs to fix and pay for this problem.
Response:
I HAD a ‘96 S-10 and the head gasket among other things went bad on my motor. Luckily it was still covered under warranty when I had the problem. I talked to a mechanic (not at the dealership) who said that is a very common problem with the 2.2 motors. GM put bad gaskets on them. John
Response:
I’ll say this one time: ELECTROLYSIS The chemical reaction of an acidic antifreeze solution sets up a current between the CI block and the AL head, which eats away at the seal ring around the cylinders. Thats what happens, and it can be prevented by flushing out the old antifreeze every year and adding rust inhibitors, which prevent the formation of acids.
