94 gmc sonoma, rear drums
Question:
was just informed that my rear drums are warped and that they cannot be ‘turned’ anymore to even out the surface, was wondering what causes this to happen, and if there is any preventative steps I can take to keep it from happening? — John Ferguson Junior PCB-Designer JL Troupe Engineering Huntsville, Al (256)-830-1223 ext 302

Warpage is caused by overheating or thin metal that can’t dissipate the heat. In an effort to make brake pressure as smooth and user friendly as possible, most places that do brakes also turn the drums/rotors as a matter of policy. Each time they are turned, they get a little thinner. Thin metal is easier to warp then thick metal. IMO, it’s not necessary. I rarely have/had the drums/rotors turned on any of my vehicles and they work(ed) just fine. Perhaps a little pulsation but nothing to get worried about. I do my own brakes.
