After doing some reading on this board, I have come to the conclusion that the slight growling noise that I hear when traveling in snow could very possibly be the transfew case chain.  The noise started last winter, and bugs the crap out of me.  GMC sais that it is "normal" Is it difficult to change one? I drive a ‘92 Sierra half ton.

Response:

Dave, It is the chain. As it wears, it growls. When it’s near the end of it’s service life, it will growl/rumble really loud, even jerk a bit. To change one, you need a rebuild kit. Be sure it includes a Morse chain. The TC comes of of the truck, is completely disassembled, and the kit parts are installed.
