Service Engine Soon Light ?
Question:
Get a book and jumper the pins on the computer to get it to blink a code out. The code description in the book will help to find the area of problem. If you don’t do it now, other problems may stem from the original and cause you grief later on. KEvin

You can’t jumper the pins on a ‘97 – it has OBD II.

Do you always make sure the gas cap is on straight and you turn it till it clicks? Not doing so is one of the most common reasons for this. Once the cap is on correctly for a short bit the light then goes out.

My 88 did that for a while and they said nothing wrong but I finally got a friend of mine to let me use his code scanner and found that my egr valve

What I told the original poster only applied to newer vehicles. I don’t believe the more vintage trucks had the closed system in use now. For instance, my ‘93 and ‘94 S-10s had no such restriction.

get a scanner or take it to a shop with a scanner, download the codes from the computer, cross reference that with the list of problem codes, fix problem, disconnect battery, reconnect battery, problem solved.
