Radio?: 93 GMC Sierra 2500

Question:

Thanks, that’d be wonderful!  My parents (and hence their truck) is over an hour away, so it’ll take some time to fault isolate just what’s going on here. PS.  What after market radio did you choose?

Well I’m grateful for his suggestion, but he sure does like to shout. I’ll be sure to try the wire-removal thing.  This must be a basic power cycle to the system. But the question lingers either way: Have you seen this actually work?  Is it something you’ve seen comonly?

Have you actually seen that work? Also: I was under the impression that the aftermarket systems would *not* fit into the dash because of the 6" width problem.  Am I wrong?

Hey, if it turns out to be the brainbox/tuner/amp thing under the dash, I have one from a 1993 Silverado 2500 that I pulled out when I replaced the stereo with an after market deck. If you are interested, I can take photos of the connections and box for you to compare to yours.  If all matches up, I’ll mail you my old box.  I have no use for it, but it was working when pulled out of the truck about three months ago. -Steve – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Hi, > My parents 1993 GMC Sierra 2500 pickup has a flaked out radio: > 1. it always displays the time as 10:04 > 2. the station presets don’t work > 3. no sound comes out > 4. non of the buttons seem to work, though the display will show 680khz AM. > My question is this:  Is this likely to be a faceplate problem (easier to > pull out) or the radio computer problem (harder to deal with box under dash > above gas pedal). > I’d like to know because I would like to do the repair myself with a > junkyard replacement.  I can probably get the faceplate for $25.  Beats me > about the computer.  The dealership said that replacing this thing could be > around $900 if it was the computer.  This is riduculous. > Any ideas?  I’m trying to figure out a good solution here.  It really seems > like GM likes to hide their truck radio components.

It could have had one of the notorious "pod" radios. The part with the buttons is just a control surface. All the guts are in a metal box under the dash. The cassette deck is a separate module too. A wire harness connects the three parts together. $900 is BS. Ask the service writer what he is smoking. Car dealers don’t fix radios. They just send them out somewhere and mark it up 5 times. Go to the junk yard with your control pod and control module and get one out of a junk truck. You probably don’t need to get the cassette deck. you’ll probably  spend $75 to $150. Maybe less if your lucky. Or take the whole thing out of the dash and take it to a good car stereo shop. I fix them in Nebraska if your close. We got us a 1993 Silverado 2500 here that has the squarish "face plate" up above the A/C Controls just to the right of the steering wheel, with a cassette deck and EQ over in the center of the dash under A/C vents, and the "amp/tuner/brains" are mounted in a silver box above the accelerator pedal. So they certainly were around in 1993. > Faceplate?  Radio Computer? > Likely I’m wrong, but I thought 93’s had ordinary radios?

Hi, My parents 1993 GMC Sierra 2500 pickup has a flaked out radio: 1. it always displays the time as 10:04 2. the station presets don’t work 3. no sound comes out 4. non of the buttons seem to work, though the display will show 680khz AM. My question is this:  Is this likely to be a faceplate problem (easier to pull out) or the radio computer problem (harder to deal with box under dash above gas pedal). I’d like to know because I would like to do the repair myself with a junkyard replacement.  I can probably get the faceplate for $25.  Beats me about the computer.  The dealership said that replacing this thing could be around $900 if it was the computer.  This is riduculous. Any ideas?  I’m trying to figure out a good solution here.  It really seems like GM likes to hide their truck radio components.

Faceplate?  Radio Computer? Likely I’m wrong, but I thought 93’s had ordinary radios?
