Question on ordering GMC Sierra pickups – frustration
Question:
If you ordered a truck with a 4.3L engine you will not be able to get it….there is a problem with this engine in the 2000 models. GM recalled all the trucks on the lots and dealers are not allowed to sell them. They even recalled them from people that bought them, (the ones that did not come in to dealers on the wreckers). The best bet would be to order a different engine, and find a dealer that is honest. GM is making one with a small block V8. Good Luck and let me know how it turns out.

What was so wrong with the engine? Would this problem exist in the Chevy too, or just the GMC? Only reason I care is my friend just (like 4 days ago) bought a 2000 Chevy w/ 4.3 in it. — Joe — "Drive it like you stole it" — 85 Chevy C10 – Y2k Ready – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > If you ordered a truck with a 4.3L engine you will not be able to get > it….there is a problem with this engine in the 2000 models. What exactly was the problem?
Response:
It was on SELECT 4.3’s concerning crankshaft bearing clearances. Not all 4.3’s are affected. We have 4.3’s that have come from the factory, with no problem, and you can order it and expect no delivery delays. Remember that the engines are sourced from a different plant, and if they had a bad run of bearings, or who knows for sure, that particular run will be hooped. But, this brings up a good point, why get the 4.3 in a full-size, as the 4.8 V8 gets almost the same fuel economy…and 75 more HP to boot! jed

Because the 4.3 is a proven design with a longer track record. As such, it’s probably more reliable than the 4.8 too. How about 2 less cylinders to mess with? In general, simpler design, less stuff to go wrong, and the peace of mind that entails. On the other hand, the 5.7 is probably the best motor for the Sierra, if you can afford it… — J.

The problem is that there was no oil pressure in the bottom half of the engine….As a gm dealer tech I know that the dealer I work for we have been instructed NOT to sell any 4.3 in the 2000 model and our sales dept. states they cannot get them either. GM tech svcs also bulletin on this..

I know what you mean. I originally set out to buy a 99 sierra but much to my dismay the local dealers didn’t have any while I was looking last December. My local chevy dealers on the other hand had many trucks to choose from so I bought a silverado instead. The new gm trucks are cadillac like compared to the other manufacturers and I happily traded in my 97 ram in on it. My ram was the biggest most expensive pile of garbage that I’ve ever owned and I was very happy to see it go.

Try a Chevy dealer. The trucks are the same except for the grille. I’ve ordered my last three vehicles, all Chevies, without problem. Just try to order an import! BTW, trucks are high margin vehicles. You should be able to order one for VERY close to invoice. — Cheers, Steve 00 Camaro SS #1363 346 6 speed 3.42 axle 96 K1500 SWB Silverado 350 5 speed 3.73 axles Z71 G80 etc. The opinions expressed here are mine alone and do not represent those of my employer or any one else. I am voicing my displeasure with General Motors and their vehicle order process here, and I would like to share my experience. Hopefully, there will be someone who can collaborate or benefit from my plight. Back on Sept 4, 1999, I placed an order for a 2000 GMC Sierra pickup. The dealer that has my business (possibly not for much longer) has told me over and over that they are unable to place any orders for GMC pickups. It has been 3 months now, and I still do not have a delivery estimate for a truck that I ordered. I am more than patient (IMHO), but this is ridiculous. If a dealer has a customer who has clearly identified all options on a vehicle he/she wants, and GM does not accept the order, that tells me one thing – General Motors does not want my business. Now that I have researched this more, I have talked to other GMC dealers that have been able to place orders with no problems. These orders are for vehicles destined to be sold off the lot, not for specific customers. The markup for a dealer goes way up for a vehicle that is sold off the lot versus directly to a customer in my experience. I am going to talk to a dealer in San Antonio today about ordering a vehicle from them and dropping the order with the inept dealership I am dealing with now. Note – this dealership is not in Austin or San Antonio, TX. If you have any information that may be of benefit to me, please email me. If you are a dealer and you would like to clear up this terrible excuse for customer service from GM, your email is welcome also. My family and I have been GM product owners for a very long time ( I own a 67 Chevy Impala as well ), but this experience has soured me to the point of looking strictly at imports for future consideration. If your dealer tells you that they can not place an order for a GMC pickup, take your business elsewhere and save yourself the headache. Sincerely, Randy Johnson Austin, TX
