There are a few problems with this theory… 1. You can’t work on the newer trucks of today, and even when they are 10 years old, you will still not be able to work on them without taking it to some shop to have them plug their dumb little computer in to it juts so you know what’s wrong with the computerized pile of shit. 2. They built trucks A LOT stronger and more rugged than back then. No IFS to brake no plastic parts to crack. I suppose in 2013, the quality of trucks will be so shitty that we will look back at 2003 and it will actually look good. In 2013, I will most likely still be driving a restored truck from the 70s or 80s… When I open my hood, I want to see nothing but ENGINE. No computers and electronic emission control parts. — Tony Kimmell Normal, IL "I think that’s how Chicago got started. Well, then…I retract my endorsement. Having never worked on a 99 or newer truck I am not qualified to recommend it. I have a 2500 HD 6.0 4X4 GMC. Like it except for piston slappin motor. Go chain yourself to a tree in the swamp until you get over the new truck fever, unless you’re deaf. GM is so big and strong with enough lawyahs, jedges, and pollytishuns on dere dole till your’re SOL if you get a knocker. Or mebbe you feel lucky. Roll de dice!! Mark

1990? I’ve been beating my 2000 Sierra Z-71 around the Rocky Mountain oilpatch for more than two years now. It’s been a great truck. The Rocky Mountain Oil Patch is probably harder more rigorous every day use than most people, even farmers and ranchers, are ever going to use a 4wd for. 1 mile in the patch is like 2 or 3 miles anywhere else. Lot’s of hard time in 4wd. Ass deep Snow, mud, 1000’s of miles of rocky rough dirty dusty roads that are always driven down way way too fast etc. My 1990 Chevy 350 4wd (two pickups ago) was a really good oil patch truck that I drove the heck out of and was still running strong at 103,000 miles when I traded it in, but I feel these newer model (1999 and up) GM pickups are quite better quality. I didn’t think you would beat the toughness and power/cubic inch of the GM 350 (5.7 liter) engine or the old 4wd GM front ends, but after driving the 5.3 liter engine a while and I think the 5.3 is really quite an improvement over the old 5.7 liter. The 2000 and newer 285hp the 5.3 It have a heck of a lot more power than any 5.7 liter. The 1999 5.3 (270hp) are have noticeably less power than 2000+ 5.3’s do. At times, to get to drilling rigs, I have to buck big long snow drifts that are higher than my bug smasher, which requires good tractable power. The 5.3 liter handles it standing on it’s head. I usually trade trucks at 100,000 miles, but I think this one will probably be one I keep for a lot more miles than that. Oh, sorry to get so long winded…the new GM pickups are quite a bit better than your 1990. You won’t be a bit disappointed. If you are buying used, stay away from the 1999’s. That was the new models first year, and the 5.3 liter they put in those trucks did not perform near as well as in the 2000 and newer and was problematic. I’ve beat the hell out of my 2000 for sure a heck of a lot harder than most of these 4wd macho truck drivers that frequent this conference, and have not had any problems with it, except for the really bad factory firestone tires that came on it, which I quickly replaced with Toyo (4 flat tires in 3 weeks with those friggen Firestone tires).

(I have to disagree, I like the older body style.
) I have two friends who have 99 C1500s. One is 2WD, 5.3l w/ 3.43 rear, other is 4WD Z71, 5.3l w/ 3/73 rear (I think). Both tow travel trailers, utility trailers and use them as daily drivers. I’ve never heard a complaint from either. Bill Seward KG4SAQ http://web.northstate.net/~seward

Yes, the frame was changed for the new style (1999 was the first year). It’s now got hydroformed sections in the front and rear, or maybe the entire thing is, not sure but I do know it was an all-new truck in 1999… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Most of the newer trucks are owned by people who do not know how to wrench. > More of the older ones are owned by folks who know how to wrench and don’t > ask a lot of obvious (almost said stupid) questions. Most of the newer trucks are owned by people who do not know how to wrench. More of the older ones are owned by folks who know how to wrench and don’t ask a lot of obvious (almost said stupid) questions. You will always see more complaints about newer trucks. 10 years from now it will be a lot of negitive comments about 2013 trucks and a lot of people swearing by the 2003 trucks. In my opinion, Chevy/GMC has always made a good strong truck with great ride quality. If you are a rancher, I would suggest looking at Ford. Otherwise, Chevy all the way. Older, newer. It really doesn’t matter. Did Chevy change their frame in the last few years? To my knowledge, it’s still the same truck with a new look. HH
