Power locks

Question:

I have power locks on my Z71, which automatically lock when the truck reaches a certain speed/rpm.  Should they unlock automatically when the truck is shut off? Are they suppose to have a manual over ride (i.e. I lift the handle and the door opens with out my having to fit the lock/unlock button)?

Response:

I have a 2000 GMC Sierra Z71. All the lock details you describe are "programmable" in my truck. Except the manual over-ride. I can not open my door from the inside without sliding the lock button or operating the electric unlock button. Might be you have a problem in your door. Or maybe not. Gary

Response:

I bet to program them, you have to have the owners manual, right?  Damn, now I have to locate one as the truck did not come with one. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I have a 2000 GMC Sierra Z71. It’s the speed that actuates the locks.  There were a couple of years(maybe only one) that used this and didn’t unlock the truck when the key was turned off.

Response:

Yea, my truck doors do not unlock just by turning off the ignition. Pulling the key out of the switch does. Golly what a thoughtful crew those GMC designers are. I love my truck. Gary

Response:

Hmm, I’ll have to try pulling the key out first, before I do anything else. Thanks all – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Yea, my truck doors do not unlock just by turning off the ignition. wiley, exactly what year model is your Z71?  If it is a 99 it is doing exactly what it was designed to do.  2000 and later are programmable in the truck. If you have a good relation with a dealer or a service advisor at the dealership, he will tell you that GM will pay for reprogramming the 99 one time if it is still in warranty.  I don’t know the policy if it is out of warranty or for the second owner. Hope this info helps. Jerry H. — JHH

Thanks for the info.  Since it is a 99 and WAAAY out of warranty, if this is the only flaw I have, I will live with it. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > wiley, > exactly what year model is your Z71?  If it is a 99 it is doing exactly what > it was designed to do.  2000 and later are programmable in the truck. > If you have a good relation with a dealer or a service advisor at the > dealership, he will tell you that GM will pay for reprogramming the 99 one > time if it is still in warranty.  I don’t know the policy if it is out of > warranty or for the second owner. > Hope this info helps. > Jerry H. > — > JHH > I have power locks on my Z71, which automatically lock when the truck > reaches a certain speed/rpm.  Should they unlock automatically when the > truck is shut off? It’s not a defect, it was designed that way. 2000 and later, the doors will automatically unlock with the vehicle is put into park, and there are some other progammable functions possible, not available on the 99s. If you want your 99 to unlock when you put it in park, you can add a little box that will make it do that. I did it on a 99 silverado and it works great, easy installation. just because some dumb engineer designed it that way  doesn’t mean it isn’t a defect :)
