1990 production year for GM light duty trucks: "H" = L03, 5.0L V8 GAS TBI "E" = LR8, 2.5L L4 TBI The LB9 (E) is the high output 5.0L MFI used only by Chevrolet and Pontiac in carlines only. As far as TBI or TPI (fuel injection) goes, the only light duty truck engine offered by CHEV/GMC in 1990 that wasn’t fuel injected was the 4.8L (T) L6 1bbl L25.

Actually, Jackass, I have DONE a 350 in a S-10. I could very well have answered your question. I was pointing out something that it seemed you didn’t realize. In a car, we agree.  In a truck application, I respectfully disagree. >This 305 is a fuel injected "H" engine, so carb mods don’t apply.<

The only 305’s in GMC 1990 k2500’s that I’ve ever seen were model "E" TBI motors, not TPI LB9 motors.   However, there’s no S on my t-shirt, so if I’m wrong, mea culpa. More importantly, however, if the poster is determined enough to tear down and "upgrade some internal parts" in an old motor, my hat’s off to him.  But that’s not advice I’d give him.

Nice langauge…there are kids and women that come in this forum.  Please save the "mature" words for your beer drinking events.

Response:

2 bolt vs. 4 bolt is irrelevant and immaterial here. Many of the newer model Corvettes were 2 bolt. This 305 is a fuel injected "H" engine, so carb mods don’t apply. If the poster is content that his engine is still salvageable he may want to consider upgrading some internal parts with parts borrowed from the "F" body (Camaro/Firebird) 305 HO catalog. If not, the option of dropping in a Goodwrench 5.7L (K) is also viable.

Response:

The 2 bolt main 305 wasn’t designed to put out a lot of power, so beyond a certain point you’re asking for trouble, especially with an old motor and transmission.  Air cleaner and headers should get you 20-40 more hp, "simple" bolt-ons if you’re handy with tools, cost about $250.  A new power module chip should net about the same increase, cost about $150, easy to do. Other than that, you’re into opening up the motor or putting on a new intake system (manifold and carburator at the minimum)…costly, and probably a very bad investment. My advice is if you’ve got a lot of miles on it, drive it until it drops. Putting band-aids on an old warrior is simply a waste of money that could be much better spent on a new crate motor and tranny overhaul. As to "issues" with dropping in a 350, it’s just a matter of money.  350 crate motors run from $1250-2500 (not including R&R), depending on state of tune, how complete, and where purchased, and then you’ve got to add whatever accessories need to be replaced or rebuilt.  If you’ve got an auto tranny, you can count on rebuilding that as well.  Any competent shop can do the job, but you can always count on some "surprises." My $0.02 worth.

Can I ask those people who know about engines to reply. It seems whenever I’ve posted a message, regardless of which vehicle of mine and which newsgroup I’m posting to, I always get replies from individuals who are of no help and lack the knowledge to answer the question. In reply to the individual listed below, YES, I do realize speed costs money. However if you are able to read my initial posting, I was not asking if speed costs money. Also, I did not ask if dropping in a 350 was going to be cheap. If you need assistance in understanding the following question "what issues would I have to deal with if I dropped in a 350" please email me privately or seek assistance from your grammar and or english teachers.

Hi, I’ve got a 90 GMC Sierra 4×4 with a 305. It’s runs well but is lacking in the power department. Is there anything I can do to wake it up a little without spending big bucks? Also what issues would I have to deal with if I dropped in a 350. Thanks in advance for your help

"Speed costs money. how fast do yuo want to go" a 350 dropin is not gonna be cheap- unless you can get a motor free — AIM- RCburntkat ICQ- 37321195 http://burnt-kat.streetracing.org/index.html – work in progress..
