How does 6.5 Diesel compare to Powerstroke and Cummins

Question:

I purchased a low mileage 1997 GMC Sierra 4X4 withe the 6.5 Diesel engine. I have heard that this engine will not perform like the Ford Powerstroke and the Cummins and it will not stand up as well.   How many miles/Kilometers can you expect from these engines??  I service it regularly, pull a 5000 lb trailer for approx. 4000 km each summer, and it is used for commuting the rest of the time. Bill

Response:

i am not sure as to how long it will last, but i sure know that it will not perform like the cummins or international perform. not as much HP, not as much torque. the gm 6.5TD has like 430ft/lbs torque, while the other 2 have 500+ ft/lbs torque. also, if i remember right, the gm is down like 30HP from the other 2. i have it worse though.. i have one of the light duty 6.5TD’s in a 2dr tahoe. it’s rated at 180HP and 360 ft/lbs torque. i don’t think it has that even. oh well, i like it and it gets me from a to b. just need to see how reliable the new 6.6 will be, then it’s time for an upgrade. (i don’t like the idea of alum. heads on a diesel…) nick – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I purchased a low mileage 1997 GMC Sierra 4X4 withe the 6.5 Diesel engine. > I have heard that this engine will not perform like the Ford Powerstroke and > the Cummins and it will not stand up as well.   How many miles/Kilometers > can you expect from these engines??  I service it regularly, pull a 5000 lb > trailer for approx. 4000 km each summer, and it is used for commuting the > rest of the time. > Bill
