GM wiper circuit board
Question:
I have a ‘92 Sierra. My wipers started going crazy in 95. I fought with GMC for years, and gave up and bought a new circuit board. They knew that 92’s were a problem, but wouldn’t accept responsibility.
Response:
My wipers would only work when it wasn’t raining. Then I heard about the recall, so I called GM and they told me that my ‘97 Silverado was qualified for a free wiper relay. And I told them what dealership to send the information so I wouldn’t have to wait for a recall paper in the mail. But my local Chevy Dealership didn’t receive information from GM, so I had no chance but to buy the damn relay. And I told them that I’d see them soon to get a refund. I’ll get my $45.00 back, someday.

I recently got a letter about this for my 1997 S-10. With 99500 miles on it the dealer did the work for free, no questions, no hassles. My wipers weren’t completely dead, but they were being squirrely. If I hit the mist switch I would get anywhere from 0 to 5 swipes. If I ran them on intermittent, they might work for a few miles then quit. On occasion they might never come on. If they did not come on and I left the switch on, usually in 10 or 15 minutes they would start working. So far three weeks after repair and only one rainstorm, they have worked perfectly. — Bill Gee There are no ‘X’ chars in my email address.

Got letter that covered my 95 astro van, which I had fixed in 1998, they refunded my $97.00 I had paid in 98 and also installed the updated delay board. Of course I had to call their 1-800 number to get them to do both, the local dealer only wanted to either update the wipers or refund my previous bill.

Response:
I had previously paid a dealer to have this fixed on my 1996 GMC K1500 Z71 back in 1999 after the wipers quit working. I got wind of the recall just this month, so I looked it up on the transport canada web site, and faxed that along with my original repair invoice to my dealer. (apparently this recall was issued sometime in 1998, go figure.) They replied that not all 1996 models were covered under the recall. So it looks like I don’t get any money back.

I have a 97 model Z71 with 99,000 miles and they replace mine for free.

I don’t know if this has been talked about or not, but I haven’t seen any posts on it yet and am wondering why. It seems that GM is going to replace the circuit boards on certain "qualified" vehicles. Everyone should be getting a letter in the mail soon about this if you own a truck that is eligible. Unfortunately, most of the problem vehicles are older and ineligible. Snowman
