Does  anyone know if this suit covers the diesel model trucks??    SPRING  HAS SPRUNG–GRASS IS RIZ EVERY THING  IS BIZZ                           BYE    BYE                                          dj

Response:

I doubt it, because even if the tank was punctured, it likely wouldn’t explode with diesel. Not nearly as flammable. — Robert Hancock      Saskatoon, SK, Canada Home Page: http://members.home.net/hancockr

Response:

About a year ago, I read an article listing Class Members in the suit.  I don’t recall any differentiation between gasoline and diesel-powered trucks.

Does anyone know the status of the settlement from GM on the "rolling firebomb" defect? I’ve owned one of these pickups since 1985 and cannot find anything on the net except the proposed settlement specs. Even GM won’t reply to e-mail on the subject. Steve —

Response:

GM Settlement Class Counsel Box 32 One Shell Square New Orleans, LA 70139 1-800-568-2885   The Fairness Hearing in this matter was held on Nov. 6, 1996.  Judge Marionneaux signed the final Judgment approving the settlement on Dec. 19, 1996.  There were several appeals filed by attorneys for certain class members.  Oral argument is scheduled for April 6, 1998 with an anticipated ruling approximately thereafter.  Once the appeal process is complete, you will receive notice regarding the proof of claim procedure.  You will then have 15 months from the date of that notice to submit your proof of claim form.  The toll free number listed above is designed to update you with the latest developments in this lawsuit. This is an abbreviation of the letter that I received.  You can call the phone # to receive more info.  I haven’t received notice regarding the proof of claim procedure yet.  I was told that the "final outcome" would be a $1500 credit toward the purchase of a new GM vehicle. Since I’m a Chevy person I thought I would haggle for the best deal then throw down the discount.  Works for me in theory anyway.

Response:

With this kind of treatment, is it any wonder anybody with half a brain has eschewed GM products in favor of Japanese products?

I received a voucher about two years ago. It was good for $1500 the first year and slowly declined to nothing over several years.

Well, yes, I thought we’d already established ‘behind the seat’ rather than under it….. But I checked further, and up thru 72 had it behind the seat. Anyone know what the last model year that a US pickup truck had the gas tank mounted under the front driver/passenger bench seat was?

I had a ‘66 3/4 ton years ago, and the tank was in the back of the cab, not under the seat (had to weld up some custom seat brackets, that’s the only reason I even remember!)

It was settled, and GM sent $1000 certificates good toward the purchase of a new GM to the affected owners. So it sounds like you know what you need to know. BTW, how does the status of a lawsuit involving trucks that were all produced more than 10 years ago affect your current truck buying decision? jhh //  Jared Haddon Hockema

I gave up waiting for my check (for my ‘77 C10) and bought a new one in ‘96.  My daughter still has the old truck, no "gift chack" in the mail yet, her address or mine. — Cheers, Steve 82 Z28 96 K1500 The opinions expressed here are mine alone and do not represent those of my employer or any one else.         The practice of using outside-the-frame ("sidesaddle") gas tanks was discontinued in 1988 with the redesign of the Chevy/GMC C/K pick-ups. None of those model trucks, or the 1999 model Silverado/Sierra’s have fuel tanks mounted outside the frame rails.  I also believe that GM no longer uses dual tanks, but rather has equiped all it’s pick-up truck models with single tanks of larger capacity (24 gallons on the short beds, 32 gallons on the long beds).  A lot of rumors, publicity and press have been spent on the side-saddle gas tank issue.  FWIW, I always thought that the earlier tanks that were an integral part of the rear wall of the cab were far more dangerous.  Rest assured that any new or recent GM pick-up you buy will not have sidesaddle gas tanks from the factory and is not subject to the settlement.
