GCVW rating for 97 K2500 Surburban?
Question:
I might be missing it in the manual, but I can’t find the Gross Combined Vehicle Weight rating for my 1997 K2500 Suburban (454, 4.10 rear). GVWR is 8600#, and the manual says I can tow 10000#. Does anyone have this number, ro does the 10000# already take into account the GVWR? Thanks. Bill Seward http://www.geocities.com/bill_seward
Response:
Bill From a 1997 GMC Sierra (Pickup Truck) Brochure, they list the GCWR as 17,000# for a 454 cu.in. (7.4L) and 4.10 rear end. I think this GCWR value would also apply to your Suburban, since the GCWR chart never makes mention of model designation. The 1997 GMC Trailering Guide shows your K2500 Suburban, with 454 and 4.10 rear end, having a max trailer weight of 10,000#, max hitch weight of 1000#. In general the GVWR has nothing to do with the max. trailer weight, for ball hitch trailering. The GVWR may be a factor in the allowable hitch weight. Not sure what you are asking about here. Generally you can take the GCWR minus the tow vehicle weight and arrive at the max trailer weight. However GM, like other manufacturers, may limit ball hitch trailering weight to a max of 10,000#. This may be due to hitch/hitch receiver limitations, or other vehicle frame limitations.
