cold morning knock from 97 350 in sierra 1500 truck ?
Question:
I have a 97 GMC Z71 truck and when it is cold over night, the next morning when I crank it and start to go the motor has an awful knock to it. If I let the truck warm up for about two min. or so then it doesnt do it. It has 80k miles and uses no oil and doesnt smoke. What should I do I run 15w 30 oil. ?
Response:
You don’t mention what size motor you have or what type of oil you are currently using, but I can make two suggestions. First is to check your owners manual and see what grade of oil is recommended for colder weather, usually 10w-30. There should be a chart or graph depicting the temperature ranges for each grade of oil recommended. The lower the first number, the better the oil will flow in colder weather, but be sure not to use an oil that has a winter (w) number lower than what is recommended. Second is consider moving to a fully synthetic oil like Mobil One. Full synthetics are have better flow characteristics at colder temperatures than standard oils and help reduce cold start-up problems. Either check with the dlr for TSB’S on this or check alldata.com, I think this is a common problem.
