99 GMC Sierra 1500 4×4

Question:

You got a tire problem for sure if it going flat!!  Have it fixed and rotate the tires to the rear.  Those Wilderness A/T’s are a poor tire IMHO.  I just took them off my 2001 GMC Extended Cab SLT Z71 at 4,900 miles because it was pulling to the right on certain roads.  There was evidence the tires were wearing out in the center, even thought they were properly inflated to 35psi.   Put on Michelin  LTX M/S and the its like I’m driving a different truck.

Response:

Tom there are some problems with 99/2000 Sierra’s. Ours had a problem with the steering shaft getting real loose. Then the vibrations started. Tried 8 pair of tires. finally went to Michelins my self. Brake rotors all four replaced warped rear pads, one pad wiped out. Hold on to your hat and buy the extended warranty!

ya I can do that but they said they did and the reason for buying a new truck is for them to work on it I’ve had many years working on vehicles I just don’t have much time but maybe I’ll have to get into it again even though I paid  $30,000 for a vehicle and have to work on it myself – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > or the wieghts, but it seems like those would be persistant problems. I talked to  someone at my work and they said possible it could be a broken belt in my tire (265/60r16 firestone wilderness a/t) not a recall tire I’m told.  left front keeps getting soft I put 45lbs in it and about a week and a half later its down to 20lbs.

Tom, What kind of tires did your truck come with? My "00 Silverado had a bad vibe on the hiway that mysteriously came & went. The dealer knew what it was as soon as I called them- two defective right side tires. They were made by General. When the dealer replaced them, no more vibes. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I seem to have a problem with my truck I took it to the dealer but they > couldn’t make the problem happen again so they can’t fix it they said.  I’ve > had my truck for 3 months I bought it used with 20000 miles, it now has > 28000 miles the problem has only happened twice the 3 months I’ve owned it > so it’s really mysterious.   Anyways to the problem, when I go down  the > interstate at about 60-70 mph the whole front end seems to vibrate or > shimmy,  the best way to describe it is that it feels like the whole front > end is gonna fall out, the steering gets irratic.   When I apply the brakes > to pull over (if I don’t pull over I feel the wheels are gonna fall off) I > can feel the pulsating vibration through the brakes when I pull over and get > out and make sure I still have 4 wheels everthing seems fine and when I get > back on the interstate and get back up to speed nothing happens anymore.  I > don’t know what to do except next time drive even further and see if > anything breaks (not a very safe act but what can I do).  Like I said only > twice this has happened so it a ghost problem I thought maybe somebody out > there has had the same problem and found the fix please help me before my > warranty is up and I have to pay through the nose to get it fixed. >      thanx all, >     Tom > PS even though I’ve had a few problems, GM all the way.

I seem to have a problem with my truck I took it to the dealer but they couldn’t make the problem happen again so they can’t fix it they said.  I’ve had my truck for 3 months I bought it used with 20000 miles, it now has 28000 miles the problem has only happened twice the 3 months I’ve owned it so it’s really mysterious.   Anyways to the problem, when I go down  the interstate at about 60-70 mph the whole front end seems to vibrate or shimmy,  the best way to describe it is that it feels like the whole front end is gonna fall out, the steering gets irratic.   When I apply the brakes to pull over (if I don’t pull over I feel the wheels are gonna fall off) I can feel the pulsating vibration through the brakes when I pull over and get out and make sure I still have 4 wheels everthing seems fine and when I get back on the interstate and get back up to speed nothing happens anymore.  I don’t know what to do except next time drive even further and see if anything breaks (not a very safe act but what can I do).  Like I said only twice this has happened so it a ghost problem I thought maybe somebody out there has had the same problem and found the fix please help me before my warranty is up and I have to pay through the nose to get it fixed.      thanx all,     Tom PS even though I’ve had a few problems, GM all the way.

or the wieghts, but it seems like those would be persistant problems. I say jack up the truck (jack stands WILL be needed), and check every thing. do you know what to look for?

Response:

See if the vehicle has had the BRAKE HOSE campaign done.  It calls for inspecting both front hoses and if they are from a certain manufacturer, replacing them.  The defective hoses have a tendency to restrict brake fluid and cause one or both calipers to apply slight pressure to the rotors. If your truck has been inspected, there should be a bright yellow label affixed to each hose stating that the inspection was done.
