4L60-E lockup

Question:

Got a question for the tech’s. I’ve got a ‘96 GMC Sierra pickup with the 4L60-E transmission. I tow a travel trailer and can’t find the information I’m looking for. I know the tranny locks up in Drive and OD, but don’t know if it also locks up in 1st or 2nd. I don’t think it does but am not absolutely sure. Also I would like to find out if the transmission locks up in Drive when I’m going downhill and have my foot off the gas pedal. If it doesn’t lock, it seems like the tranny fluid is going to heat up. Thanks in advance. Hugh

I’m not sure if the 4L60-E has the same shift points as the 4T60-E but my car locks up in 3rd at 36mph and in 4th at 45mph. The converter unlocks with 0% throttle because you want it to slip because you would be decelerating. I believe the two are the same…

Do you have a tach?  This could report behavior.  Also OBD I used to have a TCC contact on the ALDL connector; don’t know if you’d need a scan tool or if it’s given a pin on the newer OBD II standard connector.  If you had a contact, a light could easily be wired. I rented a newer camaro, 3.8, 4 spd auto, that maintained RPM’s coasting in 3rd and 4th unless brake was applied.  It also felt like it had more engine braking than I’m used to.  Whether or not TCC was involved I cannot be sure, but I didn’t feel it kick back in when light throttle was applied; it was either very smooth or never disengaged.  The tach also didn’t waver. It could be the powertrain is just engineered for more engine brake in high gear than the FWD 3t40 I’m used to. :) Jeff >Got a question for the tech’s.
