1998 Z71 Siverado engine noise
Question:
Use a different oil filter. I saw a site where this was a problem with the anti-drain back valve on some oil filters. Read- http//minimopaar.simplenet.com/oilfilters.htm

I own a 1998 Z71 Siverado with 350Ci engine and have got this noise on cold start up, it lasts about 5 minutes then goes away, to me it sounds like a sticky lifter. I have changed the oil a few times close together and switched to synthetics hoping that it would solve the problem but had no results, I have tryed using oil additives which are designed to help solvate gum and oil deposits with no results, could I be wrong on my problem, could the noise be something like an injector or maybe loose manifold. If it is a lifter how would one identify which one is the problem, I figure the only way is to start the beast with valve covers off and either listen with a stethascope to each rocker or to turn down each rocker one by one to see if one makes noise dissapear. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Paul

I have the same problem with my 1998 GMC Sierra Z-71 with a 350 eng. On cold starts it will make a ticking sound for approxamately 5 minutes, usually when I’m driving. Whenever I slow down under 20 mph it stops. I have had it in the shop, but no luck. Wes Barton

I would try marvel mistery oil in the crankcase… follow directions… neat stuff just got an ornery lifter in a ‘71 Road Runner which had been parked for a long time loosened up and running like new of course all this is assuming you have good oil pressure and are out of warranty!!! good luck

I second the "Mystry Oil"! Great stuff!I use it every oil change and it works1 Got 200K on my 89 and engine is fine. But! Beware that if that does not stop the clatter you may have a loose rocker or worse yet a defective one that may be on the verge of having a hole "eaten through it and causing you a big scarey problem which could be a disaster if it bens and gets swallowed up!( push rod). Or you may have a collapsed lifter or if you have roller type rockers one may be broken or faulty, but hell its a 98 so if you got a warranty rush to the dealer !! Fix it for it gets serious! I had a Chevelle that had 3 rockers get holes in them! Course that was long ago. Rodd
