1996 GMC Sierra Electrical-Starting Problem
Question:
I have an occasional problem when I start my 1996 GMC Sierra (4X4, 350 c.i.). I have a "drop-out" of power to the starter once in a while while starting the engine. It appears that the system shorts out, since the digital clock in the radio resets to default "1:00". Engine always starts, but it might take a few tries. Also, it appears that occasionally the auto choke (or the equivalent for electric ignition) doesn’t always set, and the engine dies when starter is released. Usually takes 3 or 4 attempts to get her going. This could be two separate problems, since they both don’t always occur at the same time. I replaced the starter, but that did not solve the problem. Any ideas? Could i be the ignition switch? I would appreciate any info Thanks, JohnR Share what you know. Learn what you don’t.

Chances are you have a faulty fuel pump relay…and the pump is being powered thru the oil pressure switch…takes alot longer to start the vehicle as you dont have fuel until you have oil pressure…..the other problem sounds like a loose wire at the starter or a bad ground connecton to the battery… Good luck – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I have an occasional problem when I start my 1996 GMC Sierra (4X4, 350 > c.i.). The other part of the ground that could be a problem and almost always overlooked, is the ground-strap harness. Usually it comes off the back of the block tot he chassis.
