1987 GMC 4-Wheel Drive Rear Axle

Question:

"Wayne W."  wrote I have a friend that has a 1987 GMC Sierra 1500 1/2 ton Pickup with 4 wheel drive. And the other day, he noticed a whining down noise everytime he came to a stop. Then the driveshaft fell off the read end. I was wondering if a lack of greasing could cause this? He just had it oiled and greased, but I think the shop didn’t grease the 3rd member. I don’t think you can blame the last shop for a u-joint failing if they didn’t grease the u-joint.  It’s probably been going for a while.  Now if this shop is the only one he takes it to, he might have a reason to complain. Thanks. I was just wondering because the driveshaft broke loose from the rear-end, and only a small amout of oil leaked out. Yet the mechanic said the whole rear-end froze up. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > "Wayne W."  wrote > I have a friend that has a 1987 GMC Sierra 1500 1/2 ton Pickup with 4 wheel > drive. Well, now I’m getting more of the story.  Sorry,  I didn’t realize the whole rear end froze up.  In that case, yes, whoever just did the oil change, (which obviously should include a fluid level check and notification of any oil leak) should take some responsibility.
