Safari AWD question
Question:
I have a GMC Safari AWD. I tow a trailer with it and it seems to tow just fine. The trailer does weight over 3500 pounds but is within the limit of the vehicle. My question is would towing the trailer be easier on the transmission if it were a 2WD vehicle? By this I mean, can I disconnect the AWD during the summer months while I am towing thus allowing me to tow a slightly higher weight and be nicer to the tranny? I don’t mean to start any flames wars, or debates over AWD & 2WD, just a small idea I though of today while coming home from a week’s vacation. The whole thought behind this is next summer I will be towing my trailer on some extremely mountainous roads. Please email me if possible as Netscape 4.6 doesn’t seem to want to remember what newsgroups I read and where I left off in each newsgroup. Thanks!
Response:
patrik, i drive a 99 Chrysler Town&Country AWD. advice, never even think of playing with the AWD system. it could cost you $4500 by repeating my mistake. AWD does not engage unless the computer senses wheel slippage. in the summer traction should be no problem with a 3500lb trailer on the ass end. dont worry about it, an AWD tranmission is tough enough. except if its a chrysler. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >I have a GMC Safari AWD.
