With that mileage if the engine itself is actually worn, aGM goodwrench engine may be your best bet. Some of the driveability concerns maybe tune/up or efi related especially if there is an engine miss, maybe you should get an hands on professional opinion.

Pretty much the question is if it is difficult and how much are we looking at.  Now the thing is the engine is in extremely rough condition.  It’s got 265,000 city driven km (165,625 miles).  First of it leaks oil into the #1 chamber (burning oil – blue smoke out of exhaust ), so we’d usually change the spark plug once a month since it would get clogged up with oil deposits. Now what causes this??  My dad tried to replace the O-rings but eventually gave up on it because the tool quite wouldn’t fit correctly.  Second it leaks oil somewhere we don’t know.  Once when I came from school in the summer and the engine was hot, it left a a decent size oil puddle after sitting for a couple of hours.  Third, rough starts.  And do I mean rough. Doens’t matter cold or hot.  But it’s worse when it’s cold.  We kinda floor it because it feels like it’s missing power and shakes like hell.  About 10 seconds after flooring it, it runs fine again.  Fourth, it stalls when warm. Backing up especially and turning.  Tries to stall and then finally stalls most of the time.  I’d say 50% of the time.  I also think it’s got the original transmission still and that shifts pretty rough from park into drive.  My dad told me since it’s revs are pretty high it will do it whenever you engage the transmission.  (every gear, only shifting.  ie: drive -> reverse, reverse -> drive, Park -> reverse, Park -> drive ).  Any more info and just ask.  We are in southwestern Ontario, canada.  We love that van b/c we use it for everything whenever we transport anything.  We also have a 97 GMC Safari SLX V6 4.3 L Vortec.  Tells you we’re pretty loyal to the GMC brand :) . 88 GMC Safari SLX V6 4.3 L
