HOW DO I PASS THE SMOG TEST????
Question:
I live in calif on a limited budget, with one child. My husband left me, and finances are low. I have to have my 87 chevie smog tested AGAIN!! On a pretest, it passed everything but NO2, which it failed. On the pretest, I put a quart of ChemB12, to up the octane in the fuel tank, but I still didn’t pass. Can anyone suggest any additive or something, that can enable me to pass on the next test. I cannot afford $300-$500 in diagnosis and repair, just to satisfy Calif bureaucracy’s prohibitive and impotent indirect tax on automobile usage ( the smog test, which has not reduced emissions since inception, just the state’s coffers) Please help!!! High levels of NO2 are usually caused by the EGR valve not working, or incorrect ignition timing (usually too far advanced). If you know someone handy who can check these, you’ll save yourself a lot of headache. It may be worth $50 for 1 hour of a mechanic’s time if you ask him to check these two things on your car. If the EGR valve is actually broken and needs replacing, it could be another $35. The thing is, just adding additives to your car doesn’t mean it’s going to help it pass emissions. You have to fix the actual problem. Hopefully, knowing what I just told you, will at least save you $ in terms of a mechanic not having to spend diagnostic time on your car. Good luck. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I live in calif on a limited budget, with one child. My husband left me, and > finances > are low. EGR or timing . You jaust can’t add snake -oil and have it pass. Move out of kalifornia

moving into the country is a good ideal, actually when i returned to florida, i was suprised they did away with the emmision test and the tax for bringing in an out of state vehicle, actually it is the pollatitions and beaurcrats polluting the air with all the smoke there blowing (somewhere). bad thing about south florida the gov is using foreingners to enforce there excessive greedy paws. too many rules too many regulations sooner or later the american people will wake up. http://www.yourtransmissionman.com – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Can anyone suggest any additive or something, that can enable me to pass > on the > next test. There’s no reason a car in good tune won’t pass the test with flying colors. Fresh plugs, new filters, and it shouldn’t be a problem. And you’ll probably make up the cost in gas savings. I think the smog test has gotten a lot polution off the road. You don’t see cars that look like they are fogging for mosquitoes any more. And the cost of administering the program is roughly the same as the state’s income from it, so it’s not "enriching the state’s coffers". — Chuck Tribolet http://www.almaden.ibm.com/cs/people/triblet Silicon Valley: Best day job in the world. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I live in calif on a limited budget, with one child. Failure of the NOX portion of the test indicates high combustion temperatures. Do you know how badly you failed this portion of the test? A NOX failure is normally caused by an ineffective EGR valve, or a bad 3-way exhaust convertor. Lean fuel mixtures can also increase combustion temperatures and cause a NOX failure. Do you know how low the CO portion of the test ran? Was it extremely low for your vehicle in Grams/Mile? This would help in a quicker diagnosis. Which test are you trying to pass? Is it the IM240 test which puts the vehicle on a Dyno, or a static low speed/high speed test. I’m not sure which California uses and I belive it varies based on where you live. Colorado uses both tests also. If it’s the IM240 test, which I think it is, there is no "Mechanic in a can" fix. The IM240 test is designed to get grossly polluting vehicles repaired, or off the road. With the current fuel prices and pending fuel shortage in a couple months, you should also realize you are wasting fuel at the same time. However, if you qualify for the state’s low income program, you can get a waiver if the repairs exceed a certain dollar amount. I think that is still $400. If you’ve done this already once, then you can’t get it a second time–you were supposed to get it fixed in that time period or get rid of the car. Ron

Two years ago a positive-backpressure EGR valve for a SBC ran me $50 list… Checking it is easy. Warm up the motor, put on a pair of heavy gloves (it’ll get hot) and find the EGR valve–its looks like a flat mushroom with a hose connected to it– on top the manifold. Feel under it, stick a finger in one of the holes, and push up. The diaphram should move, and engine speed should drop slightly. If not, valve could be bad. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > High levels of NO2 are usually caused by the EGR valve not working, or > incorrect ignition timing (usually too far advanced). This does nothing to actually test if it’s functioning on it’s own, when it’s supposed to, however.. — Mark – Oshawa, Ontario, Canada Chevy Astro / GMC Safari Message Board! Click Below! http://pub37.ezboard.com/bchevyastroandgmcsafari

there are a few different additives that "guarantee" you will pass- i never tried them because i never needed them, but for the $12 i think they cost, it may be worth a shot- you can get them at most auto parts stores- – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I live in calif on a limited budget, with one child.
