EGR Valves
Question:
did the dealer at least tell you what the code was ? that would help some.
Response:
This is a known problem is this engine. Most of the time it is caused by carbon chunks from the EGR passages getting stuck in the EGR pintle causing the valve to stick open a bit turning on the light. We have tried different fixes, GM changed the prom calibration on 1994 and newer models (not sure about 93). This was supposed to cyle the valve more to dislodge the carbon, didn’t work very well. We tried running intake cleaner with a special pressure tool sold by BG products. This sprays a fine mist of cleaner in the intake with the engine running. Had some success with this procedure, but the only real fix is to remove the intake and clean out the ports and also the cyl. head ports the EGR uses. Not cheap but better than new EGR valves every few months. Hope this helps, Gary D.

I retrofitted mine with an EGR from a 92 Yugo with great results. Kirk

I find it extremely hard to believe that your EGR valve is failing every 20,000 miles. It seems obvious that there is something else wrong. Perhaps some other component in the EGR system is causing this? This is NOT normal. Sorry, but I do not have a fix for you. Perhaps the dealer can explain why it is happening. Good luck, Norm > I need some advise regarding the EGR valve on my 1993 GMC Safari. I need some advise regarding the EGR valve on my 1993 GMC Safari. It’s just over five years old with about 98,000 miles and has the 4.3L H.O. (200hp) engine. On average, about every 10,000 – 20,000 miles the "check engine" light comes on and the dealer replaces the EGR valve. I think we just put in the sixth one the other day. Does anyone know if this is normal and if so, can something be done to fix this permanently or can I do some preventive cleaning or replace it on my own without giving the dealer $250 each time this happens? Thanks Rick

Did you say $250 ? —
