Windshield wipers

Question:

How can I adjust the windshield wipers ?? They are comming too low and are scratching the plastic cover where the pivot shaft comes out. Local dealer says no adjustment possible, wiperarms have to be replaced. 96 XLT Thanks Uwe

The arms lift off of the shafts, and can be installed in a slightly higher position on the glass.  There are tiny splines formed on that shaft, so each little spline seems to make the end of the blade sit maybe an inch higher on the glass. On my ‘92,  there’s a small latch lever that needs to be released to allow the wiper arm to be removed.  Once that little lever is moved, just pull the end of the arm straight up off the end of that splined shaft.  Then reinstall the arm in the position you want. Let the dealer know too.  ;-) dr bob

I got a recall notice on my 96 GMC Jimmy for the windshield wiper circuit board. The local GMC dealer replaced it at no charge. A lot of those had problems with vibration cracking solder joints and developing loose connections. Got questions?  Get answers over the phone at Keen.com. I have seen posts concerning wipers problems, but I never read any of them.  I have a 97 Tahoe and sometimes the wipers hang up.  If I turn on the wipers and manually make them move they eventually break free.  Any answers on how to fix that?  The problem doesn’t always happen either (seems like it only happens when my wife drives it).

Response:

get new wiper motor

Check with the dealer to see if the Safety Recall (TSB 98043 Sep. 1998) for windsheild wiper motor failures applies to your vehicle.  This one shows up on most of the ALLDATA listings for Chevy trucks. http://www.alldata.com/consumer/repair/make/Chevy_Truck.html BTW, the wipers had recently quit on my grandfather’s ‘95 C1500 and we found that the wipers would work if put finger pressure on the wiring connector at the motor (slide out the blue plastic clip that locks the connector in place). Spraying WD-40 on the contacts inside the waterproof wire connector at the wiper motor seemed to solve his problem. Before you buy.

I had the same problem with a 95.  It was not covered under the recall.  You have to replace the circuit board on the wiper motor.  It cost me about $53. It took about 3 minutes to install it.  I haven’t had any problems since then. Bill

I had the same problem with my 96. I can assume delay wiper.  You have to replace the circuit board on the wiper motor.  It cost me about $53. It took about 15 minutes to install it. Make sure to remove any grease that has migrated to the two contact arms. You will see what I mean when you open it. It is a over the finder repair. Don’t have to take the motor off. 3 screws and a wire connector. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I have seen posts concerning wipers problems, but I never read any of > them.  I have a 97 Tahoe and sometimes the wipers hang up.  If I turn on > the wipers and manually make them move they eventually break free.  Any > answers on how to fix that?  The problem doesn’t always happen either > (seems like it only happens when my wife drives it).
