Who should pay…me or the dealer???

Question:

They (the dealer) is willing to accept the offer that I proposed to them last Friday… The offer was that I would provide the part (intake manifold, $354) and they would provide the labor. I am rejecting their "acceptance" because I’ve been inconvenienced way too much (no car since last Wed. night) plus I still have to pay $360 for the original EGR repair. — Ray http://home.earthlink.net/~rguerett/

I would tell them to find a used intake somewhere and install the EGR valve on it. You pay for the valve , they cover the labor and intake. Or pay with a charge card and then call your charge card company(bank) and "charge back" the cost to the dealer.  The bank then takes the full amount charged back from the dealer and mediates the situation. Good luck. Scott — Please remove the "dot" when sending e-mail to me.

You break it, you buy it ! (read, you = dealer) This is insane. Because of their stupidity they broke it ! Tell them you will take them to court over it.

Ray-I assume this is the Vortec 4.3 V-6, with electronic egr valve. I have a ‘93 Bravada, same engine. I experienced the same problem a couple of  times, it’s nothing more than a piece of carbon that gets wedged between the plunger and seat in the valve. I think they were ripping you off from the beginning,it’s an easy repair, remove valve, clean carbon chunk from valve, reinstall valve. I can do it in 15 minutes. As for the broken ear, not likely unless hammered on- the bolt can corrode in place, causing problems. At the most, pulled threads, requiring maybe a Helicoil repair. I would demand to see the  "stuck" egr valve, course by now it really could be "stuck", if you know what I mean. If these clowns won’t try to work this out with you, have them bolt it back on with the remaing good bolt (hope the junior mechanic doesn’t get too ham-fisted) and take the vehicle to a good independent garage for repair. Yes, it will run with one bolt. And if they say, "Oh, but sir, we can’t put it back together like that, it would be in violation of federal emmission control laws, we could be fined thousands of dollars!", tell them fine, leave it apart, call a towing company with a flatbed, pay the $50-$75 towing to get the truck to another garage. You will be dollars ahead, and will probably prevail in the lawsuit for damages to your vehicle they inflicted, which I certainly hope you would instigate.  IRONDOG

They broke it, they bought it! They also bought the labor and guarantee that any problems caused by putting in the new parts will be corrected free of charge.  Anything less is not to be tolerated.     I took my 1995 GMC Jimmy in to the dealer because it was running rough.  They said it need to have the EGR valve replaced.  The next day they called to inform me that THEY had broken the "ear on the intake manifold" and it would cost ME an additional $1000 to repair.  There has been several phone calls with the dealer and GMC CAC…still in limbo.     Question to everyone who reads this:  Who is responisble and who should pay?   Please vote.     —     Ray
