Uniroyal TigarPaw tires – Problems???

Question:

My ‘99 Tahoe came with Uniroyal TigerPaw tires (new in October).  I’ve had them balanced twice so far.  Has anyone else had problems with these tires?  If so, did the dealer help?  Also, do they ‘wander’ more than other tires? Thanks for any input, Hutch Before you buy.

Response:

My ‘99 Tahoe came with Michelin’s on a 16" wheels.  They’ve got 20k miles, and I had to balance them 1 time.  I haven’t noticed any wandering though…. I know this reply doesn’t really answer your question, but thought you might find this info useful- Good Luck – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >My ‘99 Tahoe came with Uniroyal TigerPaw tires (new in October).  I’ve >had them balanced twice so far.  Has anyone else had problems with >these tires?  If so, did the dealer help?  Also, do they ‘wander’ more >than other tires? >Thanks for any input, >Hutch >Before you buy.

Basically they’re crappy tires.  My ‘98 CK1500 (purchased new) came with Uniroyal Tigerpaw’s, and I haven’t been impressed.  They squeal going around corners at average speeds, they don’t have good wet traction, and the sidewall seems excessively thin.  I brought the truck to the dealer to see about the tires, and he said I had to contact Uniroyal.  They’re rated for 40K so they’re still under warranty.  They haven’t popped or anything (knock on wood) so I plan to ride on ‘em until they do or reach 40K. I have a friend with the same model truck who put Michelin’s on as soon as he got it.  I’ve driven his truck, and compared to mine, you can feel a big difference in the handling.  The Michelin’s are much better tires.  His attitude is, "There’s alot riding on these tires".  I’m more of a miser.  I don’t race or go mudding, so even though the Uniroyal’s suck, they get the job done. I know another guy who works at a tire place, and he says they get tons of "new" Uniroyals from people like my friend who change ‘em right away.  I might be able to get a complete set of "new" Uniroyal’s for $40!  I thought about getting some Cooper’s, but at $40 a set, I might just get crappy Uniroyal’s again when the time comes!  After all, I mean, it’s a truck for cryin’ out loud!   If I had to pay full price, I’d get good tires like Cooper or Michelin.   ;-) — J.

I had 88,000 miles on the set of Tiger Paws on my 94 GMC Jimmy before they needed replacement (puncture repair that would not hold air anymore).  I would have to say that they are fairly good tires and your problem my be related to something else.

Thanks, this is good information.  I can’t afford to go buy a new set of tires if I don’t really need them.  These will get the job done until then. Can’t believe I missed this post. TigerPaws are crap. The only exception is if you live in a mild/warm climate with little rain or snow.  If you ever get rain or snow, you’ll have the worst tires on your truck with TigerPaws. Get Michelin instead. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > My ‘99 Tahoe came with Uniroyal TigerPaw tires (new in October).  I’ve > had them balanced twice so far.  Has anyone else had problems with > these tires?  If so, did the dealer help?  Also, do they ‘wander’ more > than other tires? > Thanks for any input, > Hutch > Before you buy.

This is embarrassing to say, but I actually bought a Ranger and it had tiger paws on it and they were the second worst tires I’ve ever.  I had to replace 6 tires in 2 years and the traction was pathetic.  Maybe the model you have are better, but I don’t recommend tiger paws even to enemies…..
