oil sender switch gone?

Question:

Hi, I was driving the other day and was at a stop light and my Engine Oil light came on briefly and went off. I panicked and pulled over and check the oil dipstick.  It shows full, so all the oil was there.  Whew!. Anyway yesterday while driving, I was going around a corner at a city speed, the Engine Oil came on again and went off a few seconds later. What could be causing this?  Is the oil sender switch (oil pressure sensor) needing replacement?   I think there are two in my engine.  One near the oil filter and another one near the distributor shaft plug. What do you think is happening.  I hope to god its not the oil pump, that’s expensive. I hate to break it to you, but if that oil light measures oil pressure (and on most cars it does), then it could very well be the oil pump getting ready to go.  I found this out myself the hard way at when I was 16 and killed my first car becuase I didn’t figure it out until too late (‘86 Buick Park Avenue). If you’re dead set on it being the oil sender switch, check it out first as it’ll probably be cheaper.  But I wouldn’t be driving that car around much until you know for sure.

I have a 2.8L in my 84 GMC Jimmy – may be the same engine…oil pressure gauge show little pressure – replaced the pressure sender and everything back to normal. Engine is not mounted transverse-like but is fan at the grill. Oil filter on driver side about wheel well hight and sender located tranny side of that. Easy to replace if your capable (screw out) otherwise prob 1/2 hr at the garage.
