Mine have 62k on them, and I’ve never had any problems. Randy

I didn’t like my OEM Firestones but they did last until nearly 70k miles when I replaced them with Dunlop Radial Rover P-Metric tires. I never really had a problem with the Firestones but they were just not high performance tires. They wern’t really good in the rain, the snow, mud or on the road (noisey). My Opinion — probably as good as the next guy’s! JFreitag – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Is there anyone who’s owned Firestones who hasn’t had one go bad?? I got 65K on my 91 set and traded the car. The 93 I bought had more Firestone tire problems than I care to remember. Mostly flats from simple small objects. I switched to Michelin’s and the ride was much better. It won’t be long before I swap out the tires on my 99 with Michelin’s. Back in 76 or 77 I had a Firestone 721 (aka Toumbstone) do what you describe happening to you. I heard a BANG, the car swerved violently, then started doing the slap, slap, slap sound while I got it off the road. The treads completely separated and wound tightly around the rear axle. Ruined the wheel and was a nasty pain to remove from the axle. Firestone said they’d replace it for free. I said "no thanks" and replaced all of them with Goodyear’s. — Terry Neafie Account Support Engineer Milwaukee WI sgi Inc. PHONE: 414.827.4661 www.sgi.com FAX: 414.827.4662

Hi there — My experience with Firestones has been great. On our ‘91 we changed the first set at 92,000 miles. We keep the pressure at 33 psi. The replacement set now has 60,000 miles and are still going strong. Our ‘94 has a bit of the shakes problems others have talked about, but since we just bought it we have not yet had it aligned. See ya, Randy

With my 1991 Explorer I got 120,000 miles on them with a 5 tire rotation. But the ride was terrible. When ever I hit a bump I was thrown 2 feet left or right. I switched to Michelin and they made a huge diffence. I would continue straight after bumps and held the road better. another 2 cents

I had the stock firestones on my 1993 and they had horrible traction, I switched to Goodyear Aquatreads (when the first came out read $$$), and they are 100 times better. I did get over 75,000 miles on my Firestones, before I good rid of them. -sd – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Firestones just plain suck..I had them on my 89 GMC Jimmy and one blew out >without any notice..I took it in every 3K for tire rotation and balance and >they never said anything to me..My best friend, who has a 96 XLT had one of >his Firestones blister to where it was almost not driveable..My bro just got >a 96 Bauer, and the first thing I did was get the firestones off of it..well >that was my $.02 on the subject.. > Matt

Lots and lots of people. Our ‘92 had 4 new ones when we bought it in ‘93, and they served very well. The Explorer is my wife’s car, and she’s hard on tires, too. I’ve had a few experiences with tread seperations, but they have always given warnings; either an out of ballance feeling, or a "thump" noise. I’ve always caught them before anything actually came off. I’ve never seen one that just let go with no warning, but that’s just my experience. IIRC, the Firestone 500 precipitated Firestone’s release of the almost-as-bad 721. I can’t believe the Firestone name is still considered a quality brand by some people.
Response:
Didn’t have that happen, but I had three separate flat tires with Flintstones in one year. Two of them were on a trip to Arizona from Texas. When I got back to Austin, I waited for a sale on Michelins and dumped the Flintstones. One tire guy in Las Cruces, New Mexico, admitted to me their quality control is all over the place. Some are really good but some are just awful. As for me, I’ll never use or buy Flintstones again if possible. That’s the point…..most people don’t want to be driving around on tires they have to worry about. Firestone has had problems since the 70’s when they came out with the 721 Steel exploder….. Chris
