Ford Explorer 2000
Question:
Does anyone knows when will the Ford Explorer 2000 be out in the show rooms ? I am planning on purchasing either a Blazer or an Explorer, but will not like to get into a 1999 and a few months latter the 2000 model arrives for sale. Has anyone had any negative experiences with the 1999 model ? Thanks in advance for your reply Share what you know. Learn what you don’t.
Response:
My local dealer said that the 2000’s would be there in 1-2 weeks (mid-August). Thats what my local dealer said about the ‘99 a year ago. But I couldn’t get mine until late december.

I would rather have a 1999 Explorer than a 2000 Blazer. The Explorer is much roomier, better engineered, has the best engine of the two, and of course looks better. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Does anyone knows when will the Ford Explorer 2000 be out in the > show rooms ? > I am planning on purchasing either a Blazer or an Explorer, but will not > like to get into a 1999 and a few months latter the 2000 model arrives > for sale. > Has anyone had any negative experiences with the 1999 model ? > Thanks in advance for your reply > Share what you know. (zipping up flame-retardant suit) <g> If you want to talk about engineering, then the Blazer can’t even hope to be what the Explorer is now, much less what it will be in 2001… Let’s see… * the SOHC 4.0 in the Explorer generates 45 more HP than the only engine in the Blazer, and it does it with something not in GM’s vocabulary…overhead cams. It’s smooth, powerful, and quiet, and the mandatory 5-speed automatic makes it just about perfect (although I still wish a 5-speed *manual* were offered). This engine is a truck-only engine. * the Explorer has a real truck suspension, redesigned a few years ago to replace the older swing-arm suspension in front. You don’t even need to look *under* the front to see that; the very-visible control arms were last seen on a Hummer. <g> Under the Blazer is the front suspension from the late-70s GM G-cars (Malibu, LeMans, ad nauseum), and holding up the rear end with its narrow little dimensions is none other than the differential from a Vega. That alone should send you running out of a Chitty showroom, screaming. <g> But wait…if you order now, you also get an engine of mid-1940s design with two cylinders chopped off, no overhead cams, a nice, stretchy timing chain, siamesed cylinders (not completely surrounded by a water jacket), and a "Vortec" nameplate, which GM obviously thought would make you think of tornadic power. They spent more money on the name, logo, and advertising, than on engineering. If you want to give your $32,000-plus and get *less* in return to GM for tooling that was paid for over thirty years ago, hey, more power to ya…I’d like to think my money is going toward some kind of engineering. * squeaks and rattles…drive both around for about an hour. My ‘99 XLT is nice and quiet, even over rotten roads. Not so with even *new* Blazers I’ve driven…and I *did* drive everything before getting the Explorer (except for the Nissan Xterra, which I kinda like
… * back seat? Maybe it’s not that important, but it sure is a lot roomier in the Explorer, and the seat cushions are firmer, more contoured, and more comfy. * read the mags…Consumer Reports’ last issue doesn’t even *show* the Blazer in its list of SUVs, and it ranks the Explorer as the *third best* SUV you can buy, out of all the SUVs they’ve tested. Um, not bad. <g> But, hey, it’s your money. Do one thing though…don’t just stand there in the showroom looking at them. DRIVE THEM. You’re going to be living with the thing for a while, so get what works. The Ford and Dodge dealers I went to just threw me the keys and told me to have it back in about an hour (I also looked at the Durango, and also the Rodeo, Pathfinder, and 4Runner). The Chevy dealers seemed more interested in knowing what else I was looking at, and then blasting me with 479 reasons why "they’re having so many problems with Explorers (or Durangos)". Right…and then the test drives were limited to a course *they* set (no bumps, no broken pavement, no hills, no expressways, no longer than 500 feet
, accompanied by a salesman who kept telling me how "technically advanced" the "Vortec" engine is… <snicker> Am I in the Ukraine? Good luck…and although it sounds like I’m just a tad biased, I’m biased toward whatever vehicle does the best…and the Explorer did that for me.

I love my 99 XLT – smooth ride, lots of power, great ergonomically – The only problems I have had are really nuisances. The speed-control cable was a recalled item, and I had to take off work to get that fixed. Now, the back window wiper is dead – I had the motor replaced but that one only lasted less than a day. Now, the front wipers come on at unpredictable times.. My dealer says that this is a problem they have heard about with a short in the electrical system on the turn signal stem – Hope they will fix both but again I have to once again take off work to get this done. And, I have had the new car only 3 months or so. Overall, I love the thing – I just wish those minor problems were not happening. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Does anyone knows when will the Ford Explorer 2000 be out in the >show rooms ? >I am planning on purchasing either a Blazer or an Explorer, but will not >like to get into a 1999 and a few months latter the 2000 model arrives >for sale. >Has anyone had any negative experiences with the 1999 model ? >Thanks in advance for your reply >Share what you know. I don’t know about the ‘99 blazers but we had a ‘93 GMC Jimmy (same as the Blazer basically) and it really sucked compared to our ‘99 Explorer! Really cramped inside! I think they use the same small frame for the Blazer as the S-10 mini pickup. No head room in the Jimmy, which the Explorer has tons of! Really nasty steering on the 4×4 Jimmy we had, really hard to turn. Everything went wrong with it, the a/c was the latest, it went totally out with 79k on it! This Explorer we just bought is awesome!

? They are scheduled to start arriving in the showrooms on August 20. Dealers already have their ship list from the factory on what models and with what equipment they will have. Virtually no changes in equipment. Check the Kelly Blue Book site: www.kbb.com for the 2000 Explorer price lists
