EGR question
Question:
Hi All, I have a 1994 GMC Jimmy with a 4.3 CPI engine. Every now and then the engine light comes on and the engine idle rpm increases to 1200 to 1300 rpm. When this happens the power output goes down and is sluggish. I believe the EGR valve gets a carbon deposit stuck in the valve. Here is my question has anyone come out with a EGR gasket with a screen, Stainless or titanium, built into the gasket. I think such an arrangement might help to eliminate the problem. I can’t believe that I’m the only one who has experienced this problem with this engine. When it runs properly this engine has more power than the 5.0 engine in my old PU Thanks for the bandwidth. John
Response:
Ask a dealer about the EGR TSB. I had it done on mine, it involved replacing the EGR with an updated unit and replacing the PROM with one that has updated programming. 40,000 miles later, problem hasn’t returned. You may have to pay for the parts (mine was free, "warranty" extension on these parts was also part of the TSB) but to not have it happen again, it’s worth it. For those with those screens on the gasket, where does the carbon go when it gets blocked from going into the EGR? I bet it goes and blocks some other passage, I doubt it actually makes it back to the exhaust. When my EGR clogged my idle was JUST above stalling and my brake booster lost pressure (EGR "stole" the vacuum from it). Are you sure this is the problem? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Hi All, > I have a 1994 GMC Jimmy with a 4.3 CPI engine.
