Considering S10 4X4 – Looking For Feedback

Question:

I agree with you on the fords, there junk.  But I have never had any major problems with any GM products I’ve owned.  The S-10 is a good truck.  About the only thing that goes wrong with them is the 4.3L builds up carbon in the EGR system and needs a good cleaning every 30K or so.  But I don’t see anyone backing up their ‘yota’s on here. — Tim "BigGnome" Benware ‘01 Chevrolet S-10 4×4 ASE Master Certified Technician

the 4.0 SOHC? No wonder!  The last thing I want to hear in the morning is the timing chain banging around, and there’s a LOT of 4.0 SOHC owners hearing that noise every day… Oh, and about that intake manifold gasket leak…  I swear the things got more recalls than a Contour. :) JS

Well it’s not what I said, but it’s worth some thought. My experience with Ford was bad, and all I expected them to do was to honor the 3yr-36 warranty.  It wasn’t just a dealership issue, the company also failed to honor their commitment.  I’m not saying that the big 3 auto’s won’t last, but I think the companies are showing a lack of faith in their products.  Let’s face it, if any engine fails before 75k it’s a piece of junk.  So why wouldn’t the big 3 at least match a Toyota 5 yr-60k warranty? The only reasons I can think of is that they either don’t have faith in the product, or that they prefer to screw me if I do end up with a bad vehicle. I’ve always been a Chevy person, and my current Ford was my first.  But when I think about dropping 20k+ on a new vehicle, and it’s reliability is rated as poor, I’d be nuts not to at least consider something else.  Especially when the something else is rated as "very reliable", has a longer warranty, and is made in America.  Tacoma’s are made in CA. Personally I’ve consistantly had problems getting warranty work out of US car makers (Ford and Dodge, haven’t bought a new GM yet).  Haven’t ever had a problem getting warranty work out of Nissan or Hyundai…  But, neither have had serious performance issues like my Dodge did – the Nissan blew the passenger door tweeter twice, and the Hyundai lost a decorative piece the first time it was touch-free washed (air bubble under the tape). Just my observations – this may have a lot to do with the peticular dealers I’m stuck dealing with… JS

Can’t say why, but it doesn’t apply in this case.  It’s been a long time since I looked into it.  Anyways its kind of a mute point now.  This problem has never kept the truck off the road, but it is a safety issue when it fails.  I’m thinking of an S10, but leaning strongly towards Toyota Tacoma. They’re assembled in CA and the warranty is better.  Warranty is becoming a bigger issue with me.  I think it’s BS that Ford, GM, and Chrysler only give 3yr-36k, and then push the extended warranty $$ when they should (in my opinion) just be backing up what they build. I cant buy a Ranger.  I’ve got one now, and have had some problems with Ford.  I refuse to buy another. I had a problem with a brake switch failing.  It goes about every 10 months, so I keep a spare.  Brought the truck in under warranty 4 times, and each time Ford assured me the root problem was taken care of, but all they really ever did (that I’m aware of) was to replace the 6$ switch. Ford’s official position is that once it’s out of warranty – then too bad. No lie – I’ve spent hours on the phone with Ford.  Ford says – yes it should have been fixed correctly under warranty, but since it wasn’t – my beef is with the dealership.  The dealership was sold.  It’s still a Ford dealership, but they claim the owner is different.  So the dealership refuses to do anything.  Ford motor says , they’re sorry but there’s nothing they (Ford) can do since it’s out of warranty. So basically I bought new from Ford, a problem occurred under warranty, and Ford has never made good on the factory warranty.  I’ve tried my best to reason with these people.  It’s a shame that for a few bucks, or a few hours of a mechanics time, they would sacrifice a customer.  But it was their choice. Dave

Consumer Reports is pure evil.  They hate domestic cars! Period!  They post ratings based on very minimal pool of returns which in essense makes their data unhounded in a number of cases.   In addition, they were sued for and LOST a court case in California in which they were charge with "Gross Misrepresentation of the Truth".  The only thing that magazine is good for in inflating the ego of Accord and Camry owners and kindling in my Simple fact is the S-Series trucks are great.  Their engines and transmissions are insanely reliable and regularly see odometers in the 200K+ arena with ever minimal problems.   My dad’s went to 300K with only a starter and alternator, and was still going strong  (still towed the 28ft boat without a pant) when he turned it into charity to make room for his Escalade.  My 96 is at 108k with nothing but new ball joints and an idler arm. Go Chevrolet!!!! God Bless America!!! — — 98 Camaro Money can’t buy happiness, but it sure makes misery easier to live with.

Dave, I took over the lease on a 1999 GMC Sonoma 4X4 with the Highrider suspension package.  It has around 25,000 miles on the 4.3L Vortec.  I haven’t had any problems with it except that the brakes feel like they’re wearing a little prematurely.  I’ve heard that they may be a little insufficient for the 31 X 10.5 BF Goodriches that are standard with the Highrider package. I also read the Consumer Reports information and they may still scare me into getting a Toyota when this lease ends next April.  Only time will tell… Doug – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I have a 94 S-truck, a Jimmy, so it’s the old style truck.  It’s still on the > road, still going strong.  Doesn’t burn oil, get’s a consistant 16 or so MPG, > 4×4 works fine.  Only maint.
