any problems with late 90's models?

My old 98, silverado, three door had major brake problems as did my buddies, not all I have heard of had this problem as I was told there were many brake configurations put on this truck, I would get at the most 25,000 Km’s on one set of front pads and maybe 40,000 Km’s on rear shoes, often I would get 15000 Km’s on brakes, think about it, it is a major expense! GM had many people look at it and I had good friends look at it and there was nothing wrong with the equipment, thus I am assuming that they were undersized for the truck. I own a 2000 now with four wheel disc, what a relief.

I have an s-10 blazer with 7004r trans., same clunk on 2-3 shift for 100k, this is internal in the trans. case splines and the engagement to a lugged clutch drum support, very common on this design unit, I don’t know if this has been corrected in the newer tansmissions. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > my 97 v8 5700 eng.vortec no problems, short bed half ton 4×4 > auto transmission. how ever i do hear a clucking noise when it shifts > into 3rd gear going about 25/28 miles per hour. i have been to the > dealer many times they say something about slack between > something or rather all they do is grease it, good for 30 days > noise is back. its annoying, the truck runs and drives excellent, > primo speakers (6) and sound. gmc made 2 sizes vortec Eng.’s. 5700 > and less most of the 97’s were v6’s. the reg. cab is small compared to > a 1990 cab. 97, seats 3 people 90 seats 4 and more leg room. the seat > go’s back further. > Arjay, > Stick to the ‘95. Dean Thanks for the warning. Would you elaborate on the Vortec problems? I thought it was a generic name for the fuel injection system. I have one (a V6 in a S10) and aside from munching oxygen sensors (3 so far, in 24k miles) it has been OK. And what is OBDII? My ‘97 Vortec 350 has had ZERO problems and runs BETTER than any other motor I’ve ever owned. I’ve got 35k on it now. The only complaint I had is that the truck was rated for 17 mpg on the road and never got better than 16 mpg, with 15.5 being more typical. I dumped the stock air cleaner and put a K&N high-flow air filter in it and my mileage instantly jumped up to 17.5 mpg. Other than that, it’s all stock and I’m happy (especially after having owned and driven MANY F.O.R.D.’s … piles of garbage! I’ll never buy a Ford again! … not to mention how I also crashed a 2000 Taurus so hard into a van that the van crushed the whole front end and ended up in my windshield … and the d*&#! airbag NEVER WENT OFF! In every way possible, Ford has violated my trust and will never see another penny of my money … it’s too bad product liability lawsuits cost $50k or more, take years to undertake, and don’t pay enough to make up for my permanently injured neck. Consumers are S.O.L. against companies like that.) Brian

Arjay, Stick to the ‘95. No Vortec, no OBDII. Both have problems. I’m looking for a ‘95 to ‘98 full size 4×4 pickup, Chev or GM, and would like to know if there are any "problem" models in this time frame. Like a new motor or transmission that had lots of recalls or unsolved difficulties. I’m guessing that everything in this time frame has fuel injection and ABS, at least on the front. Hope someone will let me know if this isn’t so. TIA arjay
