96 GMC Sonoma 4WD not working
Question:
I just bought a 96 Sonoma Highrider and the push-button 4WD doesn’t work. If you push the button there is a click, but the front wheels don’t engage. Anybody have any ideas? Kelly
Response:
Sounds like you got hooked by the nefarious thermo-type 4wd actuator. Have them checked to see if they are working. If not, then you can replace them with the electric versions. I’ve also heard of a cable 4×4 hub locker you can buy and install, but I have no details about it all. Hope that helps. J.R.

Response:
Well, it’s not the thermal actuator because there isn’t one on the S-trucks. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Sounds like you got hooked by the nefarious thermo-type 4wd actuator. Response:
The vacuum actuator under the battery may be bad. With the engine running, engage 4WD, if the actuator pulls in it works. If not, there are 2 possible causes, one is the switch on the transfer case that sends vacuum to the actuator, or the actuator itself is bad. Hope it’s not the actuator, they cost $65! The switch on the t-case is only $25, and it is possible to replace it yourself, with some contortions and simple hand tools. E-mail me if you have any questions, I have a 94 Jimmy (old body) and LOVE it. I also have the service manual for it, it’ll help some with a 96, not sure how much though. > I just bought a 96 Sonoma Highrider and the push-button 4WD doesn’t > work.
