94 K1500 bucking…need help please!
Question:
I have seen a similar problem. It turned out to be the rotor bug in the distributor. It would start arching, through the plastic, to the shaft it was slipped over and grounding out, but not all the time. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Are you buying gas at the same station all the time I had the same trouble > intermittinly for a month and found out they had water in the tank at the gas > station. > Sounds like a fuel delivery problem for sure. Sounds like you have something going on with the ignition/fuel control systems. I would have someone check the result codes with a scan tool. Perhaps you can find someone that will loan you a scan tool for a day or two. A good one will have tha capability to record the conditions monitored by the computer before and after something major changes. Auto Xray make one of these. Plus it in to the port under the dash and drive with the scanner connected. It sound like something is changing either your timing or fuel delivery. The computer could change both of these trying to correct what it thinks is a major change in the demand that is being put on the vehicle at the time. Like advance or retard timing and reduce fuel deliery at the same time. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Sounds like a fuel delivery problem for sure. This may be a long shot-but it happened to a friend of mine with a new BMW-there was a paper tag in the gas tank that every so often would float over to the fuel intake and partially plug it. If you stop the engine and let it sit for a few minutes, does it do the same thing?

Sounds like a fuel delivery problem for sure. Tomco makes a fuel pressure regulator and gasket kit for the Rochester throttle body which sits right on top of the unit. It’s about eighteen bucks at any decent parts supplier. You’ll need a torx socket to R&I this puppy. Good luck. Sounds like the fuel pump is dying an agonizing death. Can you hook up a fuel pressure gauge that you can watch while driving? — Cheers, Steve 82 Z28 96 K1500 The opinions expressed here are mine alone and do not represent those of my employer or any one else. Response:
The problem you have could be many. The fuel filter or pump could be one of them, and the distributor cap definintely needs replacing about ever 40-50k on the chevy trucks. But itcould also be the clutch warped over a period of time- the pressure plate specifically. This will only be during driving, getting worse with towing. So try the others first, then have the clutch checked. Good luck! -**** Posted from RemarQ, http://www.remarq.com/?b ****- Real Discussions for Real People

Well all, here’s an update. Here’s what I’ve replaced to date. Spark Plugs (AC Delco), Plug wires, Distributor Cap & Rotor, Coil, and Fuel Filter. I’ve also added dry gas solutions and fuel injector cleaners to the tanks (gone through 4 tan fulls now) and guess what….It’s still bucking. Every time I’ve changed something, it’s seemed to have gotten better, but it still exists. I even towed a trailer this weekend, and during the 4 hrs of towing, it ran like a champ, except for the last 30 mins, I couldn’t get it up to 40mph for anything, even after I unloaded the trailer…it still struggled to get to 50mph. Perhaps I should try to explain the situation a little better. Maybe someone can come up with some other suggestion. Has anyone ever crossed two plug wires at their distributor cap (accidentally of course). Like get cylinders 3 & 4 mixed up or something. The V8’s will still run, but run for shit. You can still drive, but you have next to no power (I’ve done this before so this is how I know, on my first vehicle). When you step on the gas, it struggles, bucks, skips, misses, everything. This is what I’m experiencing with my 94 K1500. I’ll be going along just fine, then all a sudden, it starts skipping, spuddering. No power, speed drops, etc. I’m starting to question the injectors, perhaps they need replacing? The ignition system seems tip top shape, as it should, I’ve replaced just about everything there. Can anyone offer any other suggestions? If I can’t fix it this week, I’ll have to take it in for servicing, which I’m sure will be costly. Thanks… Chris

Here is another vote for the crack in the cap. Had a 1995 GMC that had this same problem, especially when it was damp (humid) out. The crack wasn’t visible, but after the replacement it ran like a champ. I have heard that it was a problem for these model years.

Based on everyone’s response, it sounds like you have two good chances of fixing the problem, and based on your message, you should replace the filter anyway. By the way, the fuel filter was the problem when I had a similar problem with my ‘95 Tahoe — I picked up too much fine dust while in the dirt, and at wide-open throttle or on the freeway when fuel demand was high enough, the engine would starve intermittently. Good luck! I had a simmilar problem. It was a new rotor that had split in the middle and was grounding out on the distributor shaft. The next one I bought was AC-Delco. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Here is another vote for the crack in the cap. When my escort did this (twice) it was the fuel pump going out one time, and a dead spark plug wire the other. started the same way, first just under load, then worse and worse. Learn as if you will live forever; live as if you will die tomorrow.

My 94 k1500 has started to buck an awful lot. At first, I thought it had something to do with water in the gas and it only did it under load. Now, after i’ve added dry gas numerous times, it’s even worse, and doesn’t do it just under load, but all the time. It’s now got 103k miles, is a v8 350, 5spd truck. That sounds a lot like a problem I had a couple years ago with my 1991 GMC S-15 Jimmy. I replaced the fuel filter thinking that was what was causing the problem (had been a problem once before and found that there was a small pebble in the filter) and after replacing the fuel filter, found that the problem still existed. I took it in to a shop and they replaced the fuel filter AGAIN after I told them what the problem was and that the fuel filter had just been replaced and then after it was still having the same problem, they hooked it up to a diagnostic computer and eventually found that it was because the rotor had a crack in it. After replacing the rotor, it ran like a charm again. — Night^Ranger
