'91 Jimmy ABS?

Question:

Either the system doesn’t work at all or the bulb is blown since it never comes on, not even at startup with the other lights. I do like the gauges, although the little orange and yellow lights on the tach have come on exactly one time since I bought this thing. I’ve heard that bad solder joints are common with the digital gauges though… Could be the same problem with the ABS light… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > ABS light won’t blink when the system activates, it’ll only light in test mode > (at startup) or if there’s a problem with the system.  Like the gauges?  I LOVE > the digital dash in my 94, it’s so easy to read.  I’m not sure how to check > that bulb either… > Thanks for that info guys. Must be a bad bulb, mine lights every time I turn the truck on.  As for the lights on the tach, I have the same issue, I don’t worry about it since you can pretty much tell where they are and with an automatic tranny you’ll never get that high… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Either the system doesn’t work at all or the bulb is blown since it never > comes on, not even at startup with the other lights. Thanks for that info guys. I only bought this thing almost two months ago, so I’m not sure what recalls have been done on it. I hadn’t considered rear wheel only ABS, and it was the front that I’ve had sliding around on me…. Still, the ABS light should flash on the dash shouldn’t it? I have the digital gauges, so I don’t have any idea how to check that bulb… Thanks again. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > No prob, I knew just where to look.  Was there for my own truck… > >I’ll post it for ya: …. > Thanks.  I would have been searching for days. > Andrew > — > Reach me by ICQ. The ABS in my ‘91 Jimmy 4×4 doesn’t work. It’ll slide on ice, the ABS light never comes on, and the fuse is fine. As far as I can tell ABS is standard equipment on this year, so I should have it. What should I check first? Thanks.

Response:

I think you only have rear wheel ABS, so the wheels providing the most braking may still lock up.  Look under the hood, if there’s a fairly large metal case with lines from the master cylinder going to it, then you do have some form of ABS… > The ABS in my ‘91 Jimmy 4×4 doesn’t work. GM issued a TSB(Technical Service Bulletin) for certain S-10/S-15/Blazer/Jimmy models with ABS a while back.  Call a local dealer to find out whether this applies to your year and model.  I believe it was for 1989-1992 models, but am not sure.  If i come across the info, I will post it here. Andrew

I’ll post it for ya: Component: BRAKES:HYDRAULIC:ANTI-SKID SYSTEM Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP. Mfg. Campaign #: 99041 Year: 1991 Make: GMC Model: JIMMY Potential Number of Units Affected: 1125749 Year of Recall: ‘99 Type of Report: Vehicle Summary:      Vehicle Description: Certain 4-wheel drive pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles equipped with ABS (antilock braking system) manufactured from      September 1989 through August 1996. Under certain driving conditions the switch which signals the ABS system whether the vehicle is in 2-wheel or      4-wheel drive can malfunction causing increased stopping distances during ABS stops while in the two-wheel drive mode.      If this occurred at a time when minimum stopping distance was required, a vehicle crash could occur without prior warning.      Dealers will replace or repair the 4-wheel/2-wheel drive switch. The first phase of owner notification letters began May 31, 2000, with the last mailing      completed by October 2000. Owners can contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC at 1-800-462-8782. Also contact the National Highway      Traffic Safety Administration’s Auto Safety Hotline at 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236). I’ve had this recall done on my 94 Jimmy, and it does seem to have helped in the high traction to low traction to high traction surface situation… > GM issued a TSB(Technical Service Bulletin) for certain S-10/S-15/Blazer/Jimmy > models with ABS a while back.  Call a local dealer to find out whether this > applies to your year and model.  I believe it was for 1989-1992 models, but am > not sure.  If i come across the info, I will post it here. > Andrew
