4L60 vs 700R4

Question:

By the way, the tranny was still going strong, the original 5.7 finally gave up! The engine was untouched other than a timing chain, cam and lifters at 250,000 miles! It did not need rebuilding as the oil consumption was still very low, compression good. Greg

Response:

there was obviously something wrong with the truck, and that specific tranny…Im close to 90,000 miles on my 98 Sonoma’s 4L60E and all I ever did was have the fluid changed at about 60K Jason

Response:

> not true > the 3/4 clutch pack is the weak point

Yep, the 3/4 clutch wears sooner than the others.  So far, I’ve had sun shells fail in two transmissions at between 75,000 and 80,000 miles.  When I took the tranny on second one apart, with the exception of a couple of clutch plates in the 3/4 stack, I could still read the printing on them.  But there was still lots of friction material left. > oh, and the sun shell is used for more than R and 4th

I give.  What else is it used for?  When my trannies failed, I lost 4th and Reverse.  1st, 2nd and 3rd continued to function.  As far as I know, no torque is transferred through that part when running in those gears. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> The sun shell that engages for reverse and 4th gear is the weak link in >  the > 4L60.  Not many rocks get crawled in 4th gear. > > That’s funny– a lot of rock crawlers use them for their rigs, and >  that’s >  a > > MUCH more abusive use than most folks will put them to. > > > > 4L60 = 700R4 > > > > what specifically is ‘not good’ about them? > > > They blow apart after a short life.  I have heard newer ones are ok. >  But > > > I have not seen it yet.  So I’m beginning to wonder about that >  trans… > > > I wish there was a non electronic version of the Turbo 400 with > > > overdrive.

I’d venture that you had 1 and 3 + lock-up a broken sun shell will negate 2-4-R (band holds reverse drum, and thus sun shell, in 2 and 4, causing rear planet to work in OD mode) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> > The sun shell that engages for reverse and 4th gear is the weak link in >  the > > 4L60.  Not many rocks get crawled in 4th gear. > > > That’s funny– a lot of rock crawlers use them for their rigs, and >  that’s >  a > > > MUCH more abusive use than most folks will put them to. > > > > > 4L60 = 700R4 > > > > > what specifically is ‘not good’ about them? > > > > They blow apart after a short life.  I have heard newer ones are ok. >  But > > > > I have not seen it yet.  So I’m beginning to wonder about that >  trans… > > > > I wish there was a non electronic version of the Turbo 400 with > > > > overdrive.

not true the 3/4 clutch pack is the weak point oh, and the sun shell is used for more than R and 4th

218K here, and it had been severely abused by the previous owner. 89 S-10 4X4 Blazer.

Response:

The sun shell that engages for reverse and 4th gear is the weak link in the 4L60.  Not many rocks get crawled in 4th gear.

Are they the same transmission?  I got a response about the code 32, but not sure if it applies to my vehicle. Snowman

Response:

They are not the same transmission – I have not heard a lot of good things about the 700R4. — Merc Thundersnake#16 69 Mach 1 clone, Merc scoop, Merc steering wheel, Merc 351 W 78 f-250 XLT supercab 4×4, 400 C6. 94 Chev 3500 Crewcab 4×4 http://www.geocities.com/fordguru69/Mach1Muscle.html

Sorry for the misinformation -the 4L60E  is just a more electronically controlled version of the 4L60 (700-R4). — Merc Thundersnake#16 69 Mach 1 clone, Merc scoop, Merc steering wheel, Merc 351 W 78 f-250 XLT supercab 4×4, 400 C6. 94 Chev 3500 Crewcab 4×4 http://www.geocities.com/fordguru69/Mach1Muscle.html

to this day I still get 1-2 trucks a year where the owner wants me to take out the 350 conversion and put a 700 back in last summer I did TWO where some idiot in a neighboring town had taken out a 4L60E and put a 350 in it, one a 94, one a 96 they  took the solenoids and internal harness out and hooked them up to the vehicle plug, wrapped the whole thing in plastic bubble-pack material, and stuffed it under the passengers seat ! when that didn’t stop the ‘check engine’ light from coming on (P1870 code), they disconnected the light!

Response:

The one in my truck gave out after 230,000 miles.  Change your fluids, change your fluids, change your fluids

Response:

That’s funny– a lot of rock crawlers use them for their rigs, and that’s a MUCH more abusive use than most folks will put them to.

Gary what the heck do you know? ;-) The last company I worked for the van I drove had about 350,000 miles on the 4L60E when it was retired. Never opened the tranny other than fluid change every 25,000 miles, except for a bad shift solenoid. The damn things are junk! ;-) Greg

so you base this on ‘I’ve heards’ and ‘have not seen it yets’ ????

Response:

They blow apart after a short life.  I have heard newer ones are ok.  But I have not seen it yet.  So I’m beginning to wonder about that trans…   I wish there was a non electronic version of the Turbo 400 with overdrive.

Response:

You can install a 4L80E in a non-computer truck. All it takes is a dedicated computer and fancy wiring harness. The aftermarket has realized the demand for the 4L80E. Of course, they demand a stack of Ben Franklins to make it happen! 4L60 = 700R4 4L60E = electronically controlled 700R4 what specifically is ‘not good’ about them?
