2000 GMC truck with the 6.0 liter….noisy ?
Question:
this engine makes a lifter tapping noise when at idle….does anyone know if this is normal or what ?

I have not heard the 6 liter engine, but my ‘96 K1500 350 and my 2000 Camaro SS LS1 engines both run so smooth and quiet that the sounds of the valve train are clearly audible. Is it just the sounds of the internal parts doint their jobs, or is it obviously abnormal noise? Perhaps you could find another similar engine and listen to it? — Cheers, Steve SSOA F00-1363 CCSD #204 00 Camaro SS Lt. it only does it at idle….the engine does run smooth and good ( like all gm engines) but my friends pick on me and say my valves are clattering….It sounds a tapping noise somewhere in the valvetrain.
Response:
I had similar problem on my jimmy, but when I took it in to the GM Tech they told me that the newer generation gm’s use an a/c condenser with a dry clutch, which makes a noticeable ticking or thumping sound that you can even feel in the steering wheel at times. It will make that noise in a/c mode and in defrost settings.

Response:
Sounds as though the tech is pulling your leg about the condenser having a "dry clutch". The clutch first of all is on the compressor, and they do not use liquid in the clutch in any way. You are probably hearing the compressor itself running since the sound is heard only in defrost and a/c modes. About the engine noise…..I have a 2001 6 liter 2500HD with a noticable knock at idle as well. It dose it moslty when it’s cold. I have been told that they are famous for the noise and that it is caused by piston slap…..
