1998 GMC Jimmey and Oil gauge

Question:

Hello all, I recently purchased a 1998 Jimmy form a local dealer, the car has 16k original miles (hope its true as well as a carfax look up) anyway my question is this: When I start up the oil gauge is at 60 and as I drive whether parkway or local streets, the gauge moves down to 40 and when I stop at light, etc. it drops to 20. When I accelerate the gauge increases back to roughly 50. Is this normal for a Jimmy? Thanks, Dave- — "Together we stand, divided we fall.." www.pinkfloyd.com

Response:

It’s normal on most cars for the oil pressure to drop some after the engine (and oil) warms up because the oil becomes less viscous and passes through the bearings, etc. with less resistance – especially at low engine speeds when the oil pump isn’t turning as fast. This tends to become more noticeable on older engines as the bearing clearances increase. As long as it doesn’t approach the red zone (it certainly shouldn’t with only 16k miles on it..) I wouldn’t worry. — Robert Hancock      Saskatoon, SK, Canada Home Page: http://roberthancock.netfirms.com/

Hi, I just bought a 2001 Jimmy, it has 5000K’s on it. You will notice the oil gauge at full pressure during early morning startup, until the engine warms up and the automatic idle system turns off, about 5 minutes later.  Then, as usual, it is a normal operation for the gauge to drop during normal driving, and drop even further at dead stops.  Even during full acceleration, the pressure may not reach the level that it did during the morning startup.  So, don’t worry about it.  Change your oil regularly and it should be great.
