Wiring a 73 GMC for towing..

Question:

I have a 2001 Chev 4×4 with a tow package and need to tow my 73 3/4 ton GMC, but I’m stumped on the best way to wire it. Should I just tap into the harness at the firewall? Dana — x-no-archive:  yes

Response:

You mean you are flat towing it? GW – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I have a 2001 Chev 4×4 with a tow package and need to tow my 73 3/4 ton GMC, > but I’m stumped on the best way to wire it. Should I just tap into the > harness at the firewall? > Dana

yes — x-no-archive:  yes

Response:

hmm.  OK, I guess if you have already rigged a tow-bar up, then wiring should be the easy part (although I’m not sure the brakes of your new truck can safely handle two vehicles.) What do you need to wire up? Depending on how far you are going, you could just turn on the hazard lights on the towed vehicle. If you want the towed vehicle’s brake lights to be in series with the towing vehicle, you’ll want to run wires from the towing harness to the towed’s brake lights, not the firewall. GW > yes

Response:

If you aren’t going to be towing it regularly, it might be easier to get a set of those magnetic mount brake lights (the kind that tow trucks use) and just hook them up to the harness outlet on your 2001 towpackage.
