When is GMC gonna get a real diesel engine PU?

Question:

GM has been trying for Cat, but they do not have capacity to build enough engines, so you’ll have to wait until 2000 for the Isuzu diesel. Yes, Isuzu. They have alot of industrial diesels up north in the oil patch and they are awesome. Look for about torque around 300 and horses near 300. Smoke those lame Cummins. Lord only knows….but I wish they’d hurry up!!!!

300 ft pounds of torque is still far short of what dodge offers with its cummins diesel. and dodge still has over 2,000 pounds more towing capacity. I know Izsuzu builds some good motors, as we rode G I busses in the 60’s in Vietnam powered by them, and they ran and ran forever.  to do much better if they want to beat the Cummins, and the way to go would be with CAT. foxeye – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >GM has been trying for Cat, but they do not have capacity to build enough >engines, so you’ll have to wait until 2000 for the Isuzu diesel. Since GM just signed a joint venture with their subsidiary, Isuzu, to make 6.5L diesels in Indiana, I don’t think so. No idea if the new GM/Isuzu diesel will be different than the current 6.5 turbo(which has a much worse reputation than the old 6.2). jhh //  Jared Haddon Hockema

I realize it’s not a ‘fair’ comparison, but I’ve got an Isuzu diesel in my ‘84 Chevette (ok, quite laughing…) and it’s GREAT!  Dead stock with a 5spd, and I get 40mpg in heavy city driving, and about 60mpg on the hwy! Best thing about it – virtually no smoke!    I don’t know what the kids over at Isuzu did when they built these, but the morons at Volkswagen and a few others (MB?) should learn a thing or two from them…

From what I can gather, this is what GM is planning for their diesel engines…..     The current 6.5L turbo-diesel will continue for at least 2 more model years (1999 and 2000).  It has not yet been offered in the new ‘99 Silverado’s because they are just now fitting it into the new chassis, but should be in the later half of the model year.  A peek under the hood of a new ‘99 shows a sticker with the fan belt routing for all the current motors, including the diesel.  In ‘99 form, it will have 440 ft-lbs of torque, which is quite close to the competition (the Powerstroke has 500) but about the best that this motor can do without direct injection and intercooling.  It will have the twin thermostat set up that the ’98’s have.     Starting in the 2001 model year, GM will offer their new V-8 6.6L turbo-diesel with intercooling and direct injection in their pick-up’s. This will be a GM/Isuzu partnership (GM owns 38% of Isuzu), and will be built in Morraine, OH in a new plant currently under construction. Employees from the current 6.5L plant will be transferred.  This will be a ground-up design from Isuzu with an eye towards overall power in a motor which can still fit in a half-ton truck, GM being the only maker to do so (an error on the part of Ford and Dodge, IMHO).  Expect power to be in the range of 525 ft-lbs of torque, increasing with refinements over the years.     Currently, GM is fitting a Cat 3126 into a 3500 series Silverado as a test for the future Heavy Duty truck line.  This truck has been at the Cat plant for about the last 6 months.  The 3126 is an electronically direct injected, intercooled turbo-charged 7.2L inline 6 cylinder motor, and in high output form will generate a massive 860(!) ft-lbs of torque at only 1450 rpm’s, leaving the Cummins and Powerstroke motors looking a little anemic.  Just imaging an inline 6 like the Cummins with the displacement of the V-8 Powerstroke.  Yow.  Expect to see it with a 6-speed transmission.  Cat says this motor will meet all current and future emissions regulations without restrictive add-on’s like a catalytic converter.  The 3126 just started its production run-up in January, so Cat should be able to build all the motors GM will need.  It is also a B series motor like the Cummins but weighs in at 1250 lbs, which means most likely only a solid front axle will be able to support it.  This truck is designed to compete directly against the Fords for a share in the high-powered light truck market like ambulances, rescue trucks, wreckers, tow vehicles for RV’s, and work trucks, etc.  I predict it will be *very* popular.  Dodge also recently announced that it is looking into building a Super Duty Ram with an eye on this market segment as well, but I believe that just the Cat nameplate on the side of a Chevy truck will boost interest beyond belief.  Expect the Heavy Duty Chevy’s to be out around 2002 or later so as not to interfere with the launch of the Chevy/Isuzu 6.6L TD.
