What are the Effects of Catalytic Converter Removal
Question:
If I removed the Cat. and install a pipe in it’s place, what effect will it have on the truck? It is a 91 GMC Sonoma 4×4 PU with a 4.3L V-6. How will the computer handle the lack of a converter? Thanks, Bob
Response:
Unless the the cat is clogged the unit should not be removed, however removing it will decrease back-pressure and reduce exhaust gas temperature with the Oxygen sensor (may) interpret as a richer fuel mixture and (may) cause the ECM to lean out the mix a little. The key word is (may). 4-stroke engines do not require back-pressure to operate properly like a 2-stroke does, Any way to make the 4-stroke engine breathe easier will increase performance and efficiency. The stochiometric ratio for the ideal air/fuel ratio is 14.7 parts air and 1 part fuel or 14.7/1, this gives the best balance between performance and economy. — 714 Sandpile, The Mad Dog wavin’ good bye
